I'll repeat something I said earlier. You know how they say Russia has hired people to just rile Americans up? The trolls know enough to push our buttons, but what they are actually saying misses some cultural context to actually make sense?

That's what this is. No reasonable person really expects their child's high school to reach out to THEM for feedback on whether and where to put a fence on school property.

The person we're responding to is either a mean-spirited person trying to rile people up, or an actual Russian Troll who found facebook and twitter too boring now that the election is over, and so they have now targeted DCUM!

Pedestrian safety is important, but the fence creates other problems. Did anyone consider how that fence would impede emergency vehicles in the event of a fire or police emergency? Did they consider that it could prevent students from leaving and turn them into sitting ducks in an active shooter situation?

Lots of decisions at Churchill since Mrs. Heckert's arrival has been short-sided and poorly communicated and created new problems. As they say to new doctors, "first cause no harm."

+1 Children should be taught to use crosswalks and to not be looking down at their phones when crossing the street. Teaching and getting community involvement would have been more effective in changing behavior habits than building a fence. I agree in an emergency situation when the building needs to be evacuated quickly, the fence could be a saftey impediment.

Official crossing guards or police officers also help with pedestrian and traffic safety. Why doesn't Churchill have crossing guards?

Wow..so Churchill kids need a fence to keep them from wandering into traffic but can't find their way along the fence without a map. The Churchill drivers going the wrong way are not in better shape it seems.

I was surprised when Wootton ranked in the 93rd percentile and Churchill only ranked in the 88th percentile on the MD report card but I guess this explains it. Churchill kids are getting duller.

Drivers should be taught to stop for pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks. It's the law! And every intersection is a crosswalk - so, at minimum, there are crosswalks across Gainsborough at Victory Lane (unmarked), and Georgetowne Drive (one marked, one unmarked). But the parking lot entrances/exits are likely legal crosswalks also.

Everywhere else, it's legal for pedestrians to cross, it's just that the drivers have the right-of-way.

Crossing guards help with directing traffic as well as pedestrians. Sometimes a crossing guard acts like a temporary traffic signal, forcing cars and pedestrians who would normally have tge right of way to stop so traffic that becomes gridlock can be alleviated. Right now, students are still exiting at the entrance to the student lot as well as stepping into the road wherever they want. Cars and buses are bottlenecked in the three loops because they exit at areas without a traffic light or stop sign. Sometimes there's a staff member trying to direct traffic, but they are not consistently doing so nor are they trained and licensed guards.
