Angel Tree-This has to be wrong, right?

It's possible they asked for larger sizes to grow into

You guys, these trees are for kids who don’t have the luxury of shoes put away for a rainy day. These are kids with needs NOW. They are the kids with holes in the soles of their shoes (or soles wearing down thin)!

The parents fill these forms out. It’s doubtful they are wrong. They want to GET what they ask for.

Next time you fill out the form for your kid’s sports jersey, what would you think if the person ordering said to themselves, “A medium? Has to be wrong. I’ll send them a large.”

I wonder if OP was interpreting size 9 to be a woman's size 9 and that's why she was so surprised, as it would indeed be surprising for a 5 year old to have a woman's 9 size.

I have a 6yo DD and we picked a 6yo girl. We only have to buy one thing of the list but can but more if we want to . For toys it said, lego and play doh so I got both of those. For clothes it said size 12 pants and size 14 tops. Now, my kid is pretty well built and she is in a 7/8 so I can see a larger kid being a 10 maybe. But i cant imagine any 6yo being in a size 12 pants and a 14 shirt. I am pretty sure these clothes if bought are going to another person. So I am skipping the clothes and buying the 2 toys requested.

Who cares if the clothes are going to someone else? You sound like a horrible person.

Those surprised that impoverished children can wear larger clothes than your UMC counterpart clearly don’t understand the sociology of poverty and obesity.

Yep.

There's also a weird undercurrent of expecting poor people to be dishonest ("I think the clothes are for someone else! The horror!") that is really sad but typical. Would it be so bad if the family was looking to share the gifts with, say, an older cousin? Would it really be so bad?

100% this. I will say that I'm a pediatrician and our practice takes medicaid so I see a wide range of different socioeconomic backgrounds in our patients. Yesterday I saw a 5 year old child who was 105 pounds. She was tall, and obese. I can imagine that she would need to buy a size 12 pants (if not larger, honestly) and hem them. Or a size 12 shirt and cuff the sleeves. So yes, it's definitely possible that a 6 year old would need those sizes due to morbid obesity, unfortunately, and I'd just buy them as suggested on the tag! And if you're correct that this person was being dishonest to share the clothes with someone else- again, what's the big deal? Maybe a cousin or a neighbor didn't get on the angel tree list in time (you have to apply sooo far in advance for some of those, or have a church or a school add you to the list, so many needy kids don't end up on the lists) and the mom is trying to do a kindness and share.

If you don't want to get what is on the card, just buy a bunch of random crap and donate to a shelter.

Horrible advice! So the kid gets nothing? The kid is expecting someone to come through for her! The whole point of these trees is that their parents are failures who let them down every day. Don’t contribute to letting them down on Christmas too.

But then the things they wished for. And donate to a shelter too, if you wish.

Yes, like maybe a 12 or 13 y/o sibling who has aged out of the program? Better make sure that kid doesn't take advantage!

That could be it because that was my first thought! What big feet you have! But I quickly realized that 9 is not terribly small for a 4 yo.

I am the PP that posted this. I get that some of you disagree with me, but do I choose clothes that I would buy for my 6yo ( larger) or clothes for a young teen then?
Our Church only requests we but one thing so I dont think I am being mean. We are not rich either. My kid is getting 6 things for xmas.

1- "not rich" is far from "poor enough for angel tree"
2- your kid might be getting six things for xmas (which seems like a lot to me-- I grew up MC and I got one thing for xmas) but does your kid have shoes and clothes that fit and aren't completely worn? some of these kids genuinely need a pair of shoes.
3- you pick out clothes in the size that is requested. the kid who receives them (whether they are a large 6 year old or a teenager) will be grateful because they are needed.

I would buy clothes in the suggested size and just make sure they are neutral in the sense that they aren't "babyish" in case they are really for someone older, but also not teenage styles in case they are (more likely) just for a very large/overweight 6 year old. Target has a lot of stuff that fits this bill in their girls section, I was there recently looking for size 12 girls clothes for a charity gift and they had things like unicorn sweatshirts (trendy for tweens and also popular for younger kids), athleisure type plain hoodies, shirts with stars, etc
