Kinda disgusted by the postmortem canonization of John McCain

Warmongerer who dragged us into a 20 year (and never ending) ME war. What's the total so far, $5 trillion from the treasury, 6,000 American deaths, 60,000 Americans wounded, 100s of thousands of dead Arabs?

Somehow worth $40M from being a public servant.

Sorry, not a great guy.

20 year has too mean Afghanistan (Iraq began in 2003). No one needed to drag us into Afghanistan, after 9/11. There was almost wall to wall support for intervention. And surely you mean Afghans, not Arabs? Or are you conflacting taht with Iraq?

As for Iraq, had the Bush admin not ignored McCain's advice on HOW to conduct it, for four years, it MIGHT have gone quite a bit better.

McCain lost all respect in my book when he torpedoed the Obamacare repeal not because he believed it was the right thing to do, but because he wanted to stick it to Trump. He was a sore and vindictive loser who, much like Romney, deeply resented the fact that Trump won the presidency when he himself has lost. Now he is suddenly the darling of the liberal media. He should have resigned his seat long ago. He has not been in Washington since December, yet held on to his seat again to thwart Trump and stroke his own ego even though it was not in the interest of the American people or the State of Arizona. It is absurd that he will lie in state, and that he continues to make political statements through his funeral. Not much honor in that.

He held onto his seat so that there wouldn’t be a special election in Arizona for it. Holding onto his seat HELPED Trump and the Republicans. You people are so clueless.

He passed a campaign finance reform bill - unfortunately gutted by the courts.

he passed a bill to limit torture. during the Bush Admin.

he pushed for real action on climate change.

Yes, he was a conservative, and went along with DJT because most of DJTs actual legislative agenda has been garden variety conservatism. But he has also been a model of integrity, as he has been for decades.

mccain supported torture by cia - he only opposed by the military.

Not true. There was no need for him to hold on to the seat past June 1 for purposes of avoiding a 2018 special election, yet he did so anyway to potentially affect the vote on the new Supreme Court nominee. He coveted power to the very end.

Just possibly, he expected to return.

In any case, by Arizona law, the seat must be filled by a Republican until the special election in 2020.

In as statement by McCain released after his death:

'We weaken the world's greatest republic when we hide behind walls': John McCain's final stinging rebuke to Trump revealed as his family publish his last words

But when he was running for reelection this is what he said:

John "my dad and grandfather are admirals" McCain made blunder after blunder in his sorry career.

Unlike typical politicians and liberal media, Trump will not be hypocritical of his opinions about song-bird McCain. You got to respect that.

At a time when torture BY the military was being done in Iraq, and was undermining the military, and doing far more damage to the US international reputation than torture of AQ prisoners by the CIA.

He was NOT a civil libertarian. He did not agree with you. However the point is, he was willing to defy his own party on issues of importance to HIM. Something all too many will not do. He did not toe the line.

Er, no, I don't have to respect it and I do not.

Yes, there is a difference between wanting security measures (something that has had bipartisan approval as part of a package deal for over 20 years) and the rhetoric about the wall from President Bonespur.

Stopped "skinny" repeal because it was cheap insincere legislative trick by McConnel. He is NOT the darling of the far left, which has attacked him, but of all those who are proud of America and its greatness - which includes, yes, both liberal and neoconservatives.

And making statements to help our republic is the peak of honor.

Trump and McCain clearly did not like each other.

McCain made his dislike clear when he expressly asked that Trump not attend his funeral. Trump made his dislike clear by issuing a statement of regret and condolences to McCain's family but remained silent about McCain himself.

I cannot fault either of them ....... they both remain true to their opinion about the other.

It is striking and sad that people here are making scummy, small minded attacks on this man.
