Is the church leadership really that awful?

One of my best friends in hs was Catholic and her mom was from Ireland. They moved from their previous home because the priest at their church molested her brother.

I guess it’s not an isolated problem.

But I adore my Catholic friends.

Most regular Catholics are not the problem.

The problem is the organization - the institution and the hierarchy. It's not just a matter of child rapists, it's the mass numbers of people--and leader--involved in covering up abuse. It's very deep, and very systemic.

I don't know what can be done. The whole Catholic Church needs to be gutted and started anew, somehow. And with women involved in leadership. The current patriarchal hierarchy just cannot be trusted. The rot goes deep in the system.

Former Catholic and yes, diversity in leadership to include women would go a long way towards accountability. I'd offer that systemically, the Church will continue to see rampant pedophilia unless and until the church will accept married men as priests.

There are married men who are pedophiles. Having a wife doesn’t stop you from being a pedophile. It just means that you are a lexophile and you are also torturing some poor woman you suckered into being your ‘cover’ for your pedophilia.
Ditto for being gay.

Pedophiles shouldn’t be in positions of power or near children. Period.

this is just so f'ed up that they sit there every sunday and preach this and that yet behind closed doors....

I understand now why my mother left Catholicism. I think the institution is completely rotten very deep, and needs to be gutted. It may take centuries, but the those in the current hierarchy must be gone.

Agree. But I believe it will remain as is until women are welcomed into leadership positions, which will be never.

Maybe it’s time to just abolish this sick cult.

This was known for a long time. It's about time. Pope Francis is the only hope the Catholic Church has to restore morality in the institution. It had turned into a pervs paradise.

Totally overdue, it's been a boys club for too long.

Good thing he was able to speak up right at the last second so he wouldn't lose out on all that cash!

Money must be a more powerful memory trigger than justice is.

As if the Catholic Church doesn’t crave money

This is how they roll. They protect, enable their abuser clergy, allowing them to continue to harm others. Anybody watch the Netflix Baltimore story “The Keepers”? Abuser Maskell started sexually molesting 11-12 year old boys white he was in the seminary in the late 1950’s, and was still at it through 1992, before he fled to Ireland to avoid a looming civil case in Baltimore. Despite his known history, the Irish government hired him in Wexford to counsel their young victims of clergy abuse in 1995 - they had to know of his background, chose to ignore it. He went to abuse there. The State’s Attorneys will not file criminal charges, so the clergy abusers don’t get on the public sexual abuser lists and continue to pass background screening. Statute of Limitations laws restrict the time people harmed have to file civil cases. I don’t know how people can entrust their kids to those education systems. The Archdiocese of Baltimore has publicly named 71 clergy abusers who were under their command and control, and there are many more. The AOB has paid over $14 million dollars out in private settlements (that keeps names private) from 1982-2015. This is not a few bad apples - this is an organizational conspiracy to protect the abusers and throw the kids to the wolves. I am happy to see the truth coming out, hopefully that will continue.

Women can not be priests or deacons. A woman's primary role is as wife and mother. St. Paul is clear on this, and there's a reason Christ chose only male apostles. This story is indeed disturbing, but the male priesthood isn't the problem. Modernism and tolerance for homosexuality/effeminacy are the problem. If you want to see what authentic Catholicism is like, check out the SSPX. We reject Modernism and the errors of Vatican 2.

McCarrick -- everyone knew. Sad stuff. Part of the super force in the church.

Read Malachi Martin's Windswept House.

so behind the times

There was a piece on the Vatican and gay priests partying at night and saying mass the next day. Everyone in Rome knows, too.

Raise women to the top. Allow them to marry, and invite the gays - in an open manner - into the fold.

- too many years of Catholic school, now "spiritual and not religious"

Catholics, stop putting money in the basket! Hit the church where it hurts. Then watch how fast Francis and his red-hat buddies clean house.

OK but I really really like my parish priests and the projects our parish does with the money I put in the basket. Why would I want to see all that suffer?

Widen the door to married priests, there a few but they are converts.

Married men don't abuse kids? Some of these replies are stupid
