UVA saw one of the smallest increases in applicants this year

Wrong to say the murders had nothing to do with the school: the victims were UVA students, they were abducted/killed from the school's college town, one of the murderers was a UVA nurse and another was UVA Lacrosse player.

Lol.....do you even realize how stupid you sound? Just another uva loser.......

Not the PP, but you sound like the loser. It's not a stupid comment at all. Lots of students and parents of students who didn't get into their top choice university slam it here after the fact. There are many unhappy NoVA parents right now whose kids didn't get into UVA last week. And, if it's not the bitter parents or students themselves, it's the VT kids who like to take punches at UVA since they have been rivals forever.

Oh, please. VT is one of the schools that is used as a punching bag here on DCUM - probably mostly by UVA parents/students/alumni.

But they like to troll here after hours for fun.

Uh, and neither happened on campus. One woman was out alone on the mall and looked inebriated and left with a man. The other was participating on the mall against the alt.right protest. She wasn't even a UVA student. There are 23,000 students at UVA. Two incidences over a period of what, four or five years? Out of 120,000 students? That's a pretty amazing safety record. Every single college has its horror story. Look at this Wash & Lee accident in which a woman was killed and two seriously injured. http://www.roanoke.com/news/local/lawsuits-settled-in-suv-crash-following-w-l-fraternity-party/article_f99ebae7-e984-5d4d-8f02-ef1caf25b479.html. My own college has some incident happen almost every year. Two men were murdered during an alcohol-infused frat. incident. It didn't receive national attention but if happened off-campus, in a car, with alcohol involved. I don't blame the College. It was the students' own stupid choices that led to the deaths.

+1000. This happens on DCUM every year after the RD decisions come out. Parents and students are angry so they try to drum up some issues and post.

Unfortunately I think this may continue. The push for STEM over the last decade plus is leading people to other schools. A lot of kids and parents don’t want s school with frats. The Rolling Stone debacle did not help. A number of high profile murders and crimes in Charlottesville give concern. The basketball team was an exciting ride while it lasted, but people seemed really happy when UVa lost. My kids don’t want to go there.

Not to mention using state resources, such as the Rotunda, to run what is essentially and elite prive university.

Some points that parents make are: [b]the lack of prestige in STEM at UVA compared to VT and even GMU; the dorms are old and unappealing; a UVA degree does not seem impressive outside of UVA alums. We have not visited the campus yet but it's on our list.

All wrong. Go read the sobbing of the rejected students on College Confidential in the UVA EA 2022 results and UVA class of 2022 RD results. STEM is doing just fine, thank you very much. The old dorms are being redone the moment students leave for the summer. The new ones look like hotel rooms. The new dorms been up and running for 3 years so I don't know what you are talking about. No one compared STEM at UVA to GMU. A UVA degree is recognized worldwide and in some rankings no. 1 amongst public universities in the United States, always ahead of Michigan. (and it's law school is no. 5 - 7 depending on source and year). It's been no. 1 ahead of UCLA and Berkeley recently. Here it is no. 2. https://news.virginia.edu/content/among-nations-elite-us-news-gives-uva-no-2-public-university-ranking

So what is your real reason for bashing here?

My husband, who hires engineers all the time, can attest to this. Sorry, but UVa STEM education does not have as great of a reputation as the alumni think it does.

What are you talking about. Specifically? I have a second year at UVA. I have not seen any snobbery. DC's friends are the most down-to-earth lovely young adults that I've ever met.

UVA receives only 8% of its operating fees from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

That's because engineers coming out of UVA are managers/CEO types. They are not run-of-the-mill engineers like the kind your husband is hiring.

WSJ has a recent article about a reckoning separating the best and worst colleges into winners and losers - many colleges are struggling with enrollment and financial stability. Most colleges would KILL for UVA’s problem of applications:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/after-decades-of-growth-colleges-find-its-survival-of-the-fittest-1519209001?redirect=amp#click=https://t.co/RAWERsstw0

My college would kill for 37,000+ applicants. It's lucky if it gets 1,000. UVA's applications are up 35% since 2013. https://news.virginia.edu/content/uva-tops-admission-application-record-third-straight-year.

Don't be absurd. If anything, they will climb higher because of all the free media UVA received this year over how well it did.

This.

And you would be wrong. African American applications were also up this year at UVA. 35% of the class of 2022 are URMs.

Their performance in the NCAA tourney was truly historic.
