Letter from Cancellor re moving schools - opps - I got caught moving my kid?

"According to a representative for Bowser, Wilson had entered his three children into the DCPS lottery according to the guidelines. His high-school-age child was placed at Duke Ellington School for the Arts, an in-demand school. Wilson lives in the Brookland area of Northeast D.C., where students are zoned for Dunbar High School. Midway through the current school year, his child attending Ellington was having problems, and Wilson reached out to Niles for help.

Niles arranged for Wilson’s child to transfer to Wilson High School, in direct violation of DCPS policy and the mayoral order."

Unless he has a good explanation of why he didn't know that it was against the rules - and I can't imagine that he didn't know, and his letter suggests that he was aware that he was breaking the rules - he should leave.

Let’s not jump to talk ash conclusions.

How about he sends his kid to Ballou as an alternative. That would be a step in regaining my trust.

If you make as much money as the chancellor does, you can afford to live IB for Wilson.

Good grief.

More from NBC story:

"While Bowser is not firing Wilson, she has referred his case to BEGA for further investigation and possible discipline.

"BEGA has recently come under public scrutiny, after the Executive Director Traci Hughes was removed from her position by the BEGA board of directors. Open Government watchdog groups have cried foul on Hughes’ firing, citing the fact that the board members are Bowser appointees and Hughes had been highly critical of the Bowser administration over the years."

My hand got caught in the cookie jar. Please forgive me. But it's such a tasty cookie, that I think I will have another.

Nope, back to Dunbar where he belongs. Sorry, he got into an already in-demand school, and after "having problems" where EVERYONE ELSE'S only choice would be to stick it out or go back to your IB, his son gets a placement OOB at Wilson? Why did he even need to ask for assistance??? Ellington wasn't working? You go back to your IB. Sorry your $300k+ salary and bonus didn't buy you the sense to live in a neighborhood with a school feed you approved of.

I'm guessing he wanted to live in a more diverse area (same as many educated AA families in DC who live EOTP) and also wanted to be seen as a "man of the people" given he's chancellor?

I don't knock his decision to live in Brookland at all, but he should been wiling to abide by the rules re: school boundaries.

Then live in Crestwood or IB for Shepherd.

Why throw the DME under the bus? That seems v. odd.

The DME supervises the Chancellor. If he was asking for a special placement, it likely would have gone to her for review since he shouldn't have been able to approve his own child's.

Yet the Chancellor gets off scott free? oy.

Keep in mind the DME was also in charge during the whole attendance scandal. This could have been last straw.

What's the point of a chancellor if the DME is the one really making the decisions here? I'm not understanding how this works.

The DME puts a layer between the Mayor and the chancellor. The DME is also in charge of DPR and oversees OSSE. It is a huge job. https://mayor.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/mayormb/publication/attachments/DC-Govt-Org-Chart-03-25-17.pdf

Fine, but Wilson himself must go as well then!

This is DC. Isn't rank supposed to have its privileges? As the late Mayor for Life used to say, "to the victors go the spoils."
