The point is that he chose a large, updated house over a school zone where he could have had the best options for his kids without cheating the system. THAT is what's shallow and stupid. The gaudiness of his house is just icing on the cake.

That's it in a nutshell for me. With all the information he had available as the Chancellor he made a bad choice for his kids from the start and then compounded it by breaking his own rules. When the Mayor et al say there is no way he could regain the public trust they are exactly right.

I'm actually hopeful for the new Chancellor. The Mayor may have chosen Wilson because he was new and in doing so bypassed someone with knowledge and experience in the school system she is now tasked to lead.

Will someone please post a link to the house!?

Not permissible here. WaPo once reported that he bought it for $980k in june 2017. Neighborhood is given in previous posts. You can find it with that info.

+1, once the above info was posted, I found it easily on Redfin.

I can't believe we're discussing this, but his house isn't that bad.

My only complaint is that, as has been said before, it is not in Brookland.

Just search Redfin for a house in Langdon that closed in June 2017 for 980K.

He certainly also wins the prize for being a real estate dodo as well. Never buy the most expensive house in the 'hood!

Yes, I thought it was nice and it doesn’t look McMansion-y from the photos. I wonder if he thought he could buy wherever he wanted and didn’t need to buy for schools, since presumably his daughter was already in at Duke Ellington. I guess if he were more risk-averse, he would’ve bought a place with decent IB schools anyway.

I live in Shepherd Park, and he could’ve purchased something here in his range or maybe Mt. P., for sure. However, it would likely be nice but not completely updated. SP/CV is a small area with low inventory, and many homes that do come on the market haven’t been updated recently, sometimes in decades. Plus, his current home has 6brs, which is pretty rare here. Here are a couple that sold around the time he purchased last year in SP/CV with at least 5brs:

Right -- and even more so when it comes to students with special needs. But if we could actually study what works at individual schools -- and not stay at the sector vs sector level -- and make that available as a resource for principals, and principals would get the freedom to do some innovation.

We let DCPS principals do it with ECE to a small degree. Why not expand that through early elementary.

Our DCPS principal was formerly a chartbschool principal ina different state and has connections with charter leaders in DC. She does work with charter school principles and seems to have the flexibility to implement new ideas.

Whoops, first listing is not in SP—it’s a couple blocks away, so not zoned for Wilson.

Yes use the filters on Redfin and you will see it!

The problem isn't the house or his kid.

The problem is his naivety.

1) as a political appointee, he should never have bought so quickly. He should have rented. That he plunked down almost $1 mm in 6 months is insane to me.
2) he should have rented in bounds for a decent school and he had the funds to do so.
3) he shouldn't have purchased the most expensive house either! It's going to take a while for him to unload that house, assuming he can't find work in DC. Is he planning on homeschooling his daughter forever?
4) he should clearly not have cheated, but also he clearly didn't understand what a big deal it was -- the backlash appeared to take him by surprise.

I have no idea if he has the chops to be a chancellor, but he has demonstrated that he definitely doesn't have a lot of otherwise common sense experience. at all.

Those are all such better choices than the one he bought! His house just looks very haphazard and cheaply renovated.

Fern is zoned for Coolidge. Is it better than Dunbar?

I’m the PP who posted these. I’m on my phone and mistakenly grabbed that Fern one, but it’s not actually in SP. I don’t know much about Coolidge.

Is that dogleg on the back for drying fire hoses? It looks like something on a firehouse.
