What HBO series should I binge watch - not GOT

Could it be that The Wire hasn’t aged well for today’s first time viewers? I’ve started it a few times and just can’t get interested.

Yes: Sopranos

No: Big Little Lies, GoT, Girls. I felt sick watching one or two episodes of these. In Girls it seems that Lena Dunham is exploiting herself. Big little lies and GoT has so much violence against women -- people should pay attention, more and more violence against women is being stuck on to shows and people are acting like it's acceptable when it's not.

Well tastes do differ especially what holds our attention or entertains us. I believe the Wire holds up better than the Sopranos because the way it delves deep into it stories and characters is trenchant, and there are a lot of parallels now in the current opioid epidemic.

I tried to watch the Wire with my husband a few years ago, and for some reason I couldn't get into the first episode. He got into it, and loved it and binged on the whole thing (without me). Finally, a few years after that I tried again and got into it.

Re: GoT, I also tried to watch it myself a few times since 2011, but I couldn't get past the first few minutes of the first episode. Finally, this fall DH and I were looking for something to watch and I said - people keep talking about GoT but I couldn't get into it, and he said - ok, i keep hearing it too - let's try it. Then, watching with him I finally made it past the first five minutes to the opening credits, and then I WAS HOOKED. We both liked it a lot.

The leftovers

+1 You'll want to quit The Lefttovers at several points in season 1, but if you hang in there, it's well worth it. Late season 1 - season 3 is beautiful, incredibly inventive, extraordinarily well acted tv.

+1

YES. One of the favorite shows ever. Hilarious.

Six Feet Under is a good show and had was might be the best series finale ever. Well, second best after Newhart, maybe.

Wrong.
Big Little Lies brought to light the taboo topic of domestic abuse (while seemingly “having it all”). And no one acted like it was acceptable. No one. The unacceptability was a major the theme of the show.

+100 on the finale. Awesome closure! And “Breathe me” by Sia

The Night Of
True Detective (I even liked season 2 but I'm in the minority on that)
