Driving with an expired license is a big deal, right?

Can’t you just go on a Saturday and wait?

Last year my license expired on a Saturday, and I spaced out on renewing it the week before. I figured I'd go to the gym first thing Monday morning, then go straight to the DMV when it opened. What are the chances I'd get pulled over, right? Turns out 100%. The police officer (only other car on the damn road at 6am) pulled me over because his license plate scanning gizmo told him I had an expired license. That's right, I wasn't doing anything else naughty, just driving without a license and his computer got me.

He told me I was not allowed to drive until I renewed it, and that technically he could impound my car. So I left my car in the gym parking lot and took Uber to the DMV, renewed, and then Ubered back. (Not taking any more chances, no sir.)

Of course I still had the ticket. When the court date came around, I went to court, and happily the judge dismissed the ticket when I produced my renewed license. But I still had to waste a morning going to court.

If I had a do-over, I sure as heck would have renewed my license the week before.

Just curious where you live.

End of month is worst time to go to any DMV. Go in the middle of the month, middle of the week, middle of the day....

Go to the DMV site and read the requirements for renewing online.

If not this weather, I will recommend it. But, oh boy, it will be brutal cold that early in the morning.

PP above. I had to go in like 6:50 a.m. waiting in the line for the door to open before business hours on Sat morning. But that was in the summer.

Mine expired on the 29th. Between the holidays, me being sick and my kids being sick I didn’t get to it until today. No problem at all - Maryland MVA Express.

You should get it fixed before expiration because any cop that runs your plate will see a pop-up that your license is expired and then have the option to pull you over. My car in college was registered in my father's name and I was randomly pulled over. The police officers, who were in that aggressive pre-arrest stance, approached and asked if I was really the person on my license. Why? My father failed to respond to the DMV's request for proof of insurance AND had a newly expired license. It's just not worth it OP especially when you can fix the problem by standing in line with all the other people at the DMV. You especially don't want to be pulled over if you are anything like the PP who bursts into hysterical tears when a cop approaches.

I don't like the DMV any more than the next person, but really, if you go first thing, it's not that bad.

Yes it is a big deal! I mean, who would drive around knowingly with an expired license??

Ease up people. Shit happens.

When I had the eyeglass requirement on my DL it was a big ordeal getting pulled over. The citation required me to appear in court. I had to retake the vision part of my exam for a new ID, paid a ticket and court fees, and told by the Judge that because I had already updated license I wouldn't receive a driving suspension. All of that because at 16 I forgot to take off my reading glasses for the driving part of my test. I was prepared for the judge to be like "Okay, you got this corrected, good girl" but instead he was like "I'm not going to excuse you from the law"

And my boss has a heart of gold but cares too much about my personal decisions. Like going to the DMV. I don't want to risk it.

At age 16 you had reading glasses?

Yes especially if you’re not white.
