Driving with an expired license is a big deal, right?

Anonymous
The "friends" who have been jailed were probably not driving with expired licenses. They were probably suspended licenses and they told you it was simply expired because they didn't want to tell you they had lost their license for one reason or another.

Cops have better things to do. Like anything.

I would just go get it renewed. Go first thing in the morning when they open, and I doubt you'll be there longer than you would be with your later lunch appt.

Yeah there's way more to those stories. An expired license is at most a ticket. A suspended license is an immediate go to jail.

Unfortunately no its not. If a cop sees you have a susp lic you get a citation to appear in court and your car might get towed, sometimes even this doesnt happen if didnt know ( and sound believable) or kids are in car etc.
No jail time.

I guess that depends on your definition of "no jail time"

In some states, the officer has the discretion to either write you a ticket or physically arrest you, which means you might spend the night in the pokey.

I call BS. I've been a cop for 14 years and I could care less what color you are over this. Truth is, most cops won't make a big deal over a slightly expired DL. A license taken away by the court or DMV is one thing but a week old expired one is a different story. If possible print out your DMV appointment and carry it with you while driving.

Just look at how many cars are driving around with registration stickers over due. Typically we don't waste our time unless it's at least 2 months past the date.

I find this interesting because I watch Live PD each week and multiple times per episode, you see a cop pulling over a car for an expired tag and ends up arresting either the driver or occupants for other violations/warrants.

OP, here’s the bottom line- in order to stay on the right side of the law, you need to renew your license on time. Assure your boss that you’ll make it work- maybe you can renew it over lunch or leave early, and then come back. As a separate matter, you have a boss who won’t let you go for a single day and is encouraging you do violate traffic laws. He sounds like a mess. Be careful with him.

unless you're stopped it's not a big deal. the MVA doesn't care if you go over a few weeks. I've done this and never had to take any kind of computer test.

expired tags is a different issue.

I posted about a friend of a friend. I know her license was only expired, not suspended. She was French and was living her with her family on a valid work visa (for the World Bank or similar), and I think that's why she went to jail. This event has always scared me, because I am French on a visa!

When you are a minority, (non-white, or foreigner), you have to assess risks differently.

No this is not true - I wrote this upthread but in DC driving without a valid license results in an arrest and impoundment of your car. MPD officers do not even have discretion on this.

I think a lot of states have a 12 month grace period with regard to not having to retake the tests and stuff. In and of itself i don’t think it’s a huge deal but like PPs said, it could become a really big problem in an accident.

I'd just tell my boss I have an appointment and make sure any work gets done. I wouldn't share details about my license expiring, it's unnecessary.

Why can't you walk in on a Sat morning?

That is what I did this summer. I spent 45 min waiting and was out with the renewal paper they give you while you wait for your license and was on with my day.

Just go early tomorrow and you will get seen.

People, stop saying "it's no big deal" when you go to the DMV. Of course it's not. You're allowed to have an expired license just not drive.

It's potentially a big or even huge deal if you're pulled over or in an accident.

OP, it depends on your tolerance for risk.
