He has the freedom to say and believe what he wants. He was challenging policy on his company's dime and posting in house. It's a private company. |
The president doesn't pass laws. Congress does. |
Can't parse your second sentence there, but within the industry, IT is making the systems and networks run and fixing them when they break. Software development is designing and implementing things. You won't find any software engineers at Google who refer to themselves as "in IT". |
You are wrong. |
That might be how it is in the industry, but to the rest of the world, it's all IT. |

...back to the original question...
This is a conversation long overdue, and I'm grateful it's happening. I guess Demore is autism's "canary in the coal mine". |
Most big companies give diversity training to everyone. Autistic people might need additional training or a different type of training. |

There was a study (I wish I could link it, i will try to find it) that showed that instead of "changing autistic people" they trained the staff to understand how to communicate with autistic people. |
That might have helped Damore. I suspect that HR didn't respond because they didn't know how to respond. But if they explained why they weren't doing things his way, and also potential consequences for expressing views the way they did, he might still be working there. They also could have provided him with a broader perspective on the research regarding gender difference in the work place. |

There's the larger question here, of the term "High Functioning Autism." Everyone -- on the DCUM -- seems to push the idea HFA is no big deal. But here is evidence of how damaging it can be to lack the theory of mind needed to function in the world, no matter your level of intellect. That constantly gets glossed over here and this case is a cautionary tale. |
I never saw anyone on DCUM say HFA is no big deal. |
| I do feel that this industry—whatever you call it—should be at the forefront of this issue. Neurodiversity should be part of all diversity training. |
Yes, they do say IT as its easier for most people to understand. Software development is far more than just designing and implementing. This systems need maintained. There are far more folks than just "software engineers." You or your spouse clearly isn't in IT if you feel that way. This guy was not prepared for a manager role. They promoted him as he was smart and could do the job. Managing is a different level and few are really good at it, especially in the IT world. |

I feel very sorry for the guy. He seemed to understand things literally and when there was no response to his memo (really, no one could tell him in private the memo wouldn’t fly?!), he started to be nervously aggravated like some people on the spectrum tend to be when things don’t go as planned.
He then was taken advantage of by various people... he is naive. He should have a press secretary. Hopefully he will understand he needs to run his views and opinions by someone before making them public.’ |
