Metropolitan DC Local Politics
Socially liberal voters who are opposed to their own taxes going up. Shaking my head. That’s a good one. Classic even. |
| Why are you so stupid? PP was talking about Republicans in her district and even clarified her in a later post. No one is talking about liberals except you. |
That's not the objection. The objection is to the distribution. I'm socially liberal. I would be happy to pay more in taxes for better roads, cleaner water, stronger military. I'm not willing to pay more in taxes so that millionaires and billionaires can pay less, especially if it means adding $1.5 trillion in debt. I'll pay if they pay, though. Willingly. |
You do you! I would rather slit my wrists than move to either of those places. And of course Kansas enacted the tax plan Republicans propose every time they're in power, and it failed spectacularly. Job growth slowed, debt exploded, and public services (like, you know, school) suffered immensely. There were no winners (besides a handful of very rich people). The Republican legislature actually had to go against their most deeply held principle and override Brownback's veto to raise taxes to save the state from utter ruin. Meanwhile, Mississippi ranks dead last in student achievement rankings (among other things), and in 2013 46% of Mississippians responded to a poll by stating that they thought interracial marriage should be illegal (14% were "unsure"). https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/04/mississippi-republicans/349433/ As charming as those places sound, I'll stick to true blue coastal cities, thanks. But you can leave whenever you want. We won't miss you. |
It's pretty common. Educated people lean strongly socially liberal. However, some don't feel strongly about those issues and vote in their own economic interests (i.e. for lower taxes). Comstock at this point appeals to neither their morals nor their wallets. |
| Socially liberal can also just mean pro-choice, pro-equality, etc even if you aren't in favor or more govt spending. |
Yep. And there are tons of people out there who identify as such. I'm an independent. |
+1 My husband and I are currently exploring moving further west or south. Plenty of great areas across the country where we'd be quite happy. |
Yeah right. |
So what exactly do you do to promote a pro-equality vision? |
Especially their wallets, judging by whining on this thread. |
No bathroom laws, etc. |
Exactly. |
Are you under the impression that the increased taxes in the GOP plan are going to . . . schools? They aren't. They are going to corporations, and to make sure millionaires and billionaires don't have to pay estate taxes. Are all Republicans similarly deluded? Is that why you support this plan, because you think it will improve public education? |
Will not do a thing to help MC. |
