SATC: what is it that Big found hard to handle about Carrie?

So this.

Although the fact that someone like Big would ever commit to someone like Carrie was the most unrealistic part of the show.

+1

For that matter, someone like Aidan would have never committed to someone like Carrie either. They literally shared zero life goals and philosophies. At least Big and Carrie were both gauche and strivers.

The show was too much like a wishful romance novel/wet dream for your average aging, selfish, dramatic, gold-digging, horse-faced woman who can't land a man.

Big is new money wealthy. He didn't come from wealth (or only modestly wealthy), but went to school and got a very high paying job in NYC.

It's pretty apparent that they were differentiating between old and new money with these two characters.

Trey and Char are both old money as reflected in their priorities and mannerisms.

Carrie is a LMC trashy gold digger who wouldn't know class if it hit her in the face. Her obsession with name brand items; lack of financial sense; lewd behavior; socialing in dirty clubs and lust for rich men signify her poor tacky taste. She thinks spending money you do not have on name brand goods you do not need is the epitome of elegance and Mr Big, a gauche NYC Wall Street striver is the be all of class and dignity.

I think Big married Natasha because he, like Carrie, is a social climber who needed to marry into class in order to fit in and attain social legitimacy. He's a smart guy, he knows the kind of women rich men marry. It is his social climbing ways that made him run away from a commitment to carry for almost a decdsfe. As much as he enjoyed their trsyts and her company, for a long time her status as the sex columisny splashed across the side of the bus was a serious deal breaker for him.

He and Carrie are alike; they are both outsiders who came to NYC in search for glamour and riches. They have these fantasies of "old New York" based on movies and music and each try to act like how they think elegant New Yorkers should act like. Annoying Strivers. He only settled for Carrie when he realized his time was running out and that he had aged out of the competitive marriage market he had tentatively dipped his toes in earlier. They are sort of made for each other.

Aiden would go for a sweet girl next door type.

This describes half of the women living in Manhattan. This type always belittles other cities and parts of the country even though they live in a third floor studio apartment when they are 35 years old.

I don't know about that. She dated quite A LOT of losers and lower class men.

After all their breakups and reunions and the growth he shows over 6 seasons, I don't think he would do that. Yes he might get scared and freaked out but you don't leave someone at the altar in front of ~ 300 guests. Decent people just don't do that.

Omg I HATED the movies. That scene in particular was painful, but yet I totally could see him do it. He was nothing but a jerk to her the entire series, and what did she ultimately end up doing? Marrying him. Ugh.

I always thought it was funny that Big was supposed to be of a higher social class, especially his attendance with Mah-Mah at an Episcopalian church. He looked like any other Manhattan striver out of CCNY or St John's Charlotte's first husband had the patrician manner and air totally missing from Big. I thought he and Carrie looks and acted from the same class.

He had a driver on call 24/7 and she was taking the bus and wearing hodgepodge "designer" outfits. Not the same class at all.

I love that we're still talking about this show over a decade later. Not sarcasm, just shows how powerful this series was to a lot of us!

It was powerful. It made tons of young women think it was fine to sleep around like Carrie and everything would work out. That dating requires you to sleep around. That it's normal to hang around for a man who won't commit. I swear I have friends stil single in Manhattan because of that show.

Not sure about this. It maybe just a popular show and those young enough to have been drawn in are now moms on DCUM.

Where did the show reveal that Big was new money? The episode where he went to the Episcopalian church with his mother made him seem very old money. He always seemed to be connected, too...and the 24/7 driver. Also, his name was John James Preston. I think both he and Trey were old money, and that is why Big wound up with Natasha. He just wasn't as stuffy as Trey. We don't learn as much about his background bc he was supposed to remain a mystery.

That's who he married, and then he kissed Carrie in Dubai in the movies -- ugh!

Big fancied himself a Trey. Natasha was more like a Charlotte. Carrie was crass, unrefined and label obsessed somewhat of a gold digger. Her most serious relationships shown were with men of means Aiden, Big and Barishnykov all men who could keep her in her Manolos. Re-watching years later in season 1 Big made it clear to Carrie that he liked her in a fun, amusing way but was not in the mood to wife her or anyone else at that time. She did not want to hear it. He was #goals for her and she was pissed that he did not feel the same way. That episode where she showed up for church with his mom in a costume-y church lady outfit was cringe-worthy.
I still say in the end he married her because the fans wanted a happy ending, but in his mind after a major health scare, two failed marriages and getting up there in years (wasn't he was supposed to be 10+ years older than she was) he was tired of the chase and knew she would never leave him. Carrie was Aiden's fantasy. He was the simple guy who fell for a label-obsessed aging party girl about town. In reality she would have ended it at some point because he a doormat when it came to her. That episode where she invited Big up to his cabin, the ex with whom she cheated first time around? Oh hellz no!!! SATC 3 plot: Big gets a clean bill of health and cheats with the new 20-something VP at his company.

Exactly.

Big is a social climber who wants the social status and wealth Trey was born into. He is so theatrical and over the top about it with the fancy car and chauffer;expensive clothes; dining at the hottest and most exclusive restaurants. I wonder who he married when he was younger and had less status and wealth. Marrying upper class WASPY Natasha was probably a #goal he could finally attain in his late forties as a rich older man.

The thing I love about both Aiden and Trey was that each was so comfortable with their lot in life. Trey didn't have to try hard to be a certain way, he just was. Aiden was a good guy for who Carrie was a fantasy but really he belongs with a sweet girl next door type.

Despite not being a good match for Charlotte, I actually really liked Trey. He was a decent man who really tried to do right by his wife. That scene after they decide to separate, he shows up for her Home and Garden shoot. He also left her a million dollar apart'ent that was in his family for generations. A decent man with a lot of class.
