After all their breakups and reunions and the growth he shows over 6 seasons, I don't think he would do that. Yes he might get scared and freaked out but you don't leave someone at the altar in front of ~ 300 guests. Decent people just don't do that.

Agree totally. The movies were a huge misstep IMO.

But he didn’t actually DO that!
It was quite well written bc even the writers agree with you that he would NOT actually do that—but would definitely have a momentary freak out.
And the beginning of the movie shows his point of view where that’s exactly what’s happening and he catches himself and even reprimands himself out loud and says “what am I doing???” And he changes his mind and tells the driver to turn the car around and go back…
Yet by the time he does that, she is driving away in her car and their limos pass each other as HE is returning to the wedding venue.

But at that point she didn’t know he was coming back for her. And it was already too late…

All that is to say that I and the writers agree with you that it was a bridge too far for him to have actually left her at the altar, but he didn’t actually do that.

This. Pretty clearly spelled out in the episode referencing The Way We Were when Carrie tells Big "Your girl is lovely, Hubbell," the idea being that Carrie was free-spirited and untameable while Natasha is less complicated and easier.

I think that's what Carrie tells herself as cope.

Did he show up on time, or even late to marry her? No. So he did leave her at the altar. Just annoying, childish people.

She was way too old to have kids with. Men like Big want healthy heirs.
