| I binged the entire season and I found it very disturbing, very graphic. The Post article makes good points. Parents should definitely discuss this with their children because there are salient issues brought up in the show--not just the suicide, but the objectification of women, social media bullying, rape and inability to consent to sex because of intoxication. Even the parents' infuriating tendency to take their kids' "everything's fine" without digging deeper is a good talking point. |
| My daughter (15) just thinks it is horribly produced and the girl is manipulative. How would ALL these kids find cassette players? HOW does Tony keep popping up at just the right moment? If he wears that leather jacket EVERY day, why does it still look like new? What is the deal with Clay's parents - Seriously? The principal is surprised that the kids write on the bathroom walls?! And the school photographer kid is everywhere! How many high school kids are that heavily tatted up - its like a prison yard! The whole thing is a mess. |

Dh and I were watching it over the past 2 week to prescreen it for our 13yo anti social DS. We could not get past the 7th episode. I don't think it's a good show - bad production value, terrible writing. Maybe it gets better but I don't have 6 more hours to waste and find out.
So far I dont think it's appropriate for our DS. He has 2-3 good friends he plays video games with and would prefer to watch cartoons or super hero flicks! |
Ugh, tell your daughter it's "make believe" like in a tv special. Heavily tatted up, visit my DD's school, the teachers have more tattoos than that and yes, plenty of students have that many tattoos and the piercings are out of control. |
It's meant to be seen through a teenager's eyes, not their parents. Laughable. |
This. The parents on this forum are so "reactive" rather than pro active. Too late again, parents. |
Agree. And they come off just like previous generations. "Oh that Elvis Presley and his gyrating hips! My daughter will never listen to his music!" "There is nudity and sex in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. My teen will never watch this!!" Why, why are your turning into these LAME parents that think you are going to rescue your teen by dictating their lives. You are so out of the loop. |
Wait, what? It isn't real?????? Teens can not tell the difference. We must ban this.

Our 12 year old ask to watch and was told no. Way too graphic for a child her age and widely criticized for glorifying suicide. we generally are pretty liberal as to what she is allowed to watch.
Yes, some of her friends have seen in but I am pretty sure their parents were clueless about the content. |
| My kids middle school (NBMS) just sent a letter home to all parents about this show yesterday. |
|
+1. My kid is at TJ, and they just sent an email saying their had concerns. They couldn't stop parents from letting kids watch it but... kids were discussing at school, please talk to your kid, please watch it with them if you do let them, please remind them of the following mental health resources available, etc. DC 2 is at an FCPS MS. Nothing from them (yet). Did other FCPS HSs get an email? our was signed by the principal, "to the TJ community," and not a KIT blast. |
This is what I don't understand. My daughter's friends (all 12 or almost 13) watch anything they want via Netflix on their computers. Grey's Anatomy, 13 Reasons Why, Vampire Diaries, etc. They just watch in their rooms and the parents have no idea. I get that high schoolers watch these programs and don't need permission to do so, but 12 seems pretty young. |
| The rape scenes are very graphic. The suicide scene is very, very graphic. Far too much so got young teens IMHO. It makes me sad that my 13 year old has seen very little sex in her life, but what she has seen are two rapes courtesy of 13 reasons. |
LOL I'm 13!!! just watched it ... it's pretty good but anyways um because EVERYONE talks about shows at school. Doesn't really matter what age group it was meant to be for, everyone in or above middle school will watch it anyway. 5/6 of all the classmates I know have watched it... word spreads quickly. |
