| There is so much that parents are not being told by school administrators. They intentionally keep parents in the dark about policies because they know there would be parental outcry. From adult students in the classroom, to boundary decisions that intentionally create "rich" and "poor" schools, the list is endless. Parents need to be involved, ask questions, show up at school board meetings, and hold elected officials accountable for their decisions. |

I don't want to say to much for fear of losing my job but I am an ESOL teacher at Lee High School. There are tons of 20 year old males at this school that are in freshman classes such as World History 1, Biology and World History 1. To me this is an issue that has been ignored despite teacher protests.
This is an age issue, not an immigration issue. In my level 3 ESOL class I have freshman who were level 2 ESOL last year but I also have 20 year olds. 14 year old girls should never be in a class with 20 year old men. In my ESOL classes I have seen 19 year old men dating 14 year olds. Nothing is ever done about it. My voice has been ignored for years but FCPS has been doing this for years within ESOL classes, but they are now spreading outside ESOL as well. The only way your daughter will not have 20 year old men in their class is if they take honors classes as a previous FCPS teacher already stated. |
Sadly, this is not surprising. Do administrators think parents are stupid and won't notice that adults are sitting in class with their children? We know this is happening at the high school level, but what is the age range in an elementary class or middle school class? I've seen some 6th graders in my child's school that I highly suspect are 15-16 rather than 11-12. Re: honors classes, I'm sure many parents will opt to enroll their kids in those classes, but what about the children who are not capable of performing well in honors classes? Is an "average" 14 year-old condemned to sit in 9th grade Algebra I with 20 year olds? So will "honors" classes be watered down like AAP has been? |
| Moco has released info about their METS program. I plan to request the corresponding info for fcps from our school board. I have one child miserable at her middle school due to constant fights and disciplinary issues, to the extent that we will likely send her to private school next year. I wish there were another option, even a charter school |

I don't know the details, but I am pretty sure that this 22 year old rule is due to federal law--not local. I don't think the school systems have a choice. That is why it is so important to stop the illegal flow into the US.
We don't even know for sure that these "kids" are 22--they could be 30. |
can you share which school? |
No. Those programs don't have transportation and are optional. Most older students would prefer them, because they are actually much better for an older student, but many have to attend local high schools instead because they can't get transportation to the transitional school. |
Wow. Has it even occurred to you that those students are LEGAL immigrants? I worked in one of those programs, and nearly all of our students were legal immigrants and many were born in the USA. MS-13 gang members don't go to high school, and certainly not when it's optional. |
If we are being forcecd to fork out tax dollars to pay for our schools and more $$$ to keep our kids safe, we are being ripped off. We need to sue - this is unconstitutional. |
I also teach ESOL in FCPS and have never seen anything like this. I think you are making it up. |
What were you, born under a rock? Obviously, you have no daughters in public school or you profit from this lunacy. There ARE many MS-13 gang members in public schools. This is a verified fact. |
Of course you see no evil, you make money off of this!! Enjoy your vacation home! |
I don't know how you don't see this as an ESOL teacher. A 17 year old registers and takes ESOL level 1 government their freshman year. They turn 18 during the year. Their second year when they turn 19 they don't take social studies. Their junior year when they turn 20 and are level 3 ESOL they take a team taught world history class which half the class will be general Ed 14 year old freshman. This also happens with biology for level 3 ESOL students. No way you teach ESOL in fcps. |
Yes they are allowed o enroll in our public schools free of charge and with reduced documentation. 1 high school in Fairfax County [Stuart-Mason district] got 47 undoc/illegals just in 2017. A county commissioner has the bodies piling up in Mason district from MS13. http://wtop.com/fairfax-county/2017/03/local-leader-gang-crime-angry/ 47 people is about 3 or 4 ESL classrooms and teachers. That school, Bailey's, got so large with illegals/anchors that FCPS had to rent and retrofit an office building. Obama opened the floodgates with his dreamers and gave us NO money for them. But why should the federl govt use our funds for them? Obama should have to pay with a personal check. FCPS should have them all in an old empty elementary school [is one exists]. What are they doing with Graham Rd? Publicize the cost of running the site: building, maintenance, staff, food, transportation. Send Obama the bill. |
Sorry, but yes I do teach ESL in Fairfax. I am not saying it's impossible. We do have older students who can't attend alternative schools in regular schools sometimes. However, there aren't that many, and the ones I've seen are not obviously older and have been mostly women. Moreover, they have tended to be people who really wanted to learn, as they are not required to go to high school at that age. I have never seen a freshman class full of 20 year old men as you describe. |
