Does FCPS let 18 yo's register as freshman?

Anonymous
Last week's horrific and violent rape in a MOCO HS got me wondering about FCPS's policies with regards to illegal Adults who register for public education services. Do they go to An alternative HS or are they mainstreamed with regular students? All the recent MS 13 gang activity makes me wonder who is mingling with our kids. Anyone from FCPS who can share insight into the policies? And in which High Schools are these unaccompanied minors and 18 yo's being placed?

yes hey do.... they are allowed to be in school till they are 22 if they are ESL........

I would hope so. Some of our fall kids have to wait till 18 to go to school their senior year. 18 year olds have no business with 13/14 year olds but they aren't going to change the system to make middle school inclusive of freshman.

No. You can be 17 though (this is a change). That said, I have many students who were almost 18 when they came in and are still here 2-3 years later.

They enroll wherever they live. I would say most HS in FCPS have some unaccompanied minors and some have many. The exception to that might be Langley, as their ESOL population is very small.

And a reminder that the Supreme Court has said that public school must enroll all otherwise eligible students, regardless of their immigration status.

FCPS has two Adult High Schools for students 18-22, both of which include ESOL education. There's also a Transitional HS ESOL program for students age 18+ who test into grades 9-12 at various schools throughout the county. My guess is that at least the guy who is 18 would have been in one of those two programs and not in a regular classroom setting. The other one probably would have been in a regular school setting but in the ESOL program if he did not speak much English.

It depends how old he was when he registered. He's 18 now, but he may have been 17 when he entered the school. I have a student this year who turned 18 about 2 weeks after he entered school. The adult schools and transitional programs in FCPS are options for some students, but they are small, don't provide transportation or meals. Most kids don't like that and want to stay in the regular school even when they're over 18.

That is true regarding the fact that there are two adult high schools. But the previous superintendent - Garza - established "newcomer schools within schools" so that students can register in schools local to where they live. Parents need to wake up and ask serious questions about who is mingling with their children. Teachers and other adults must get security screenings before being allowed to teach. Why aren't we asking necessary questions about the backgrounds of people coming here. They broke the law coming here illegally. I don't know why they are given automatic benefit of the doubt that they are "safe." Who knows who they are? I hope the family in MOCO sues them for every penny. Their poor daughter deserves it.

He was probably 17 when he enrolled. Both of them had been here 6-7 months so probably enrolled at the beginning of the school year.

Being 18 in high school is not unusual, although obviously being 18 in 9th grade is. My rich white kids were both 18 when they graduated from high school, as were probably 3/4s of their classmates (given a 9/1 age cutoff for kindergarten entry and a June graduation date, the majority of the seniors should have had their 18th birthday by graduation).

PP here. I can see FCPS letting the older guy enroll in regular classes (or ESOL at a regular high school, anyway, depending on his English proficiency), but I have serious doubts they'd put him in with the 9th grade class. I'm on my phone and can't look it up easily but I am curious how that works. I fully support adult ESOL and educating all students regardless of their immigration status, but don't think it's a good idea to put 18 year olds in a freshman class for any reason.

A Virginia Principal just called into the radio - WMAL- stating that law requires Virginia to educate people up to age 23 and that 18+ year old students are enrolled and mainstreamed as freshman if they come to the system with no previous credits. She said what disturbs her most is that these adults are required to take gym 9 and 10 as part of their curriculum with 14 and 15 year old freshman and sophomores.

What is the maximum age for a middle schooler? Because I see kids who are obviously a few years older, and have heard about kids being held back. These are not necessarily immigrants or ESOL.

Is there an alternative middle school setting for those who have had academic and/or disciplinary issues at the current middle school?

If they have no credits from their country, they are freshman no matter how old they are. I teach ESOL and I have kids from ages 14-20 in my classes. It is not ideal, but that's the way the system works right now.

FCPS' ESOL pilot program pushes more students into the base high schools - those hs with higher esol populations - to take advantage of resources that are there during the day. Also, the students prefer this since it's easier to find child care during the daytime hours.
