Can we assume this is the law of the land in all of VA, every county?
23 and 14 in Gym class together. Wonderful.

This law has got to go.

The Virginia law is up to 22, not 23.

22 at the start of the year. Normally turning 23 during the year. just like the 13 year old girls turn 14. I can't believe anybody, anywhere, is defending this atrocity.

When we have to vote on issuing bond to fund this school, are you going to vote yes or are you going to complain about yet more resources going to this population?

Not enough space in the programs and they're not at every school. If students work, the hours are pretty hard to do as well.

Do they go to An alternative HS or are they mainstreamed with regular students? All the recent MS 13 gang activity makes me wonder who is mingling with our kids. Anyone from FCPS who can share insight into the policies? And in which High Schools are these unaccompanied minors and 18 yo's being placed?

FCPS has two Adult High Schools for students 18-22, both of which include ESOL education. There's also a Transitional HS ESOL program for students age 18+ who test into grades 9-12 at various schools throughout the county. My guess is that at least the guy who is 18 would have been in one of those two programs and not in a regular classroom setting. The other one probably would have been in a regular school setting but in the ESOL program if he did not speak much English.

No. Those programs don't have transportation and are optional. Most older students would prefer them, because they are actually much better for an older student, but many have to attend local high schools instead because they can't get transportation to the transitional school.

I hope these "unaccompanied" students are walking to their local school. Along with sharing a classroom, I don't want my children riding a school bus with older men - it is a less supervised environment than school.

Fairfax County is pretty segregated and leadership and doesn't care about students in the lesser pyramids. They are happy to throw some money toward smaller class sizes and such, but won't take any strong stances on things like accompanied minors and adult students flooding certain schools, as long as they are not seen or heard at the good ones.

They also take the bus together. Most of these kids don't live right next to the schools.

Well, that is just unnerving. Shame on every party that has a hand in this, both the federal government, and the county.

We don't put newly arrived 10 year olds with no education in with kindergarten so why should adults be in class with minors in high school?

Sure, white flight. Like when they fled into FCPS from "urban" areas. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.

It's not about race, it's about socioeconomic status and educational expectations. High-achieving, professional class African-American, Hispanic, and Asian parents will flee, too. They don't want their kids exposed to bad influences and it's not PC to say, but an 18+ year old should NOT be in a freshman class with 14 year olds. That's absurd!

So, an immigrant who is poor is, by your definition, a "bad influence," and only lacks education because it wasn't expected of them?

Gross and really dumb.

Most immigrants who come here are seeking better opportunity, including access to education. Go shake your family tree and see who falls out. I'm pretty sure you'll find at least one illiterate immigrant ancestor.

Couch it however you want, or try to hide behind other minorities, who can also exhibit and participate in racism, even against themselves. It doesn't change what this is, and always has been about.

Have you met these kids from ESOL classes in Fairfax schools? They not just illetarate in English, they are illiterate in Spanish. We are talking about 17-18 y.o. males who have 1 or 2 years of formal school education at best. Most of immigrants who came here legally are seeking better opportunity, including access to education. Most of the illegals seeking other things.

The big question to FCPS folks: what can we do to stop this BS? Why do we have to have these 3000+ "kids" around and why are we paying for them?
Anonymous
Because it's the law. But that doesn't mean that we have to have 18 plus year olds with 14 year olds. We can push for separate classes. Just like elementary school - if you're not within 2 years of the appropriate age group for the class you need to go elsewhere - to a different school or class.

Maybe certain schools need to have an ESOL/adult ed wing?

Wrong. It is against the law for them to be in our country.

Last year, the parents in Loudoun County made a BIG deal about having schools open during elections when adult voters would be in the building with children. It was such a big deal, that they cancelled school for the day. Yet, we come to find that each and every day, counties throughout the DMV allow adult male strangers who aren't even legally authorized to ve in our country, walk the hallways of our schools alongside our children, no background checks, no questions asked.
