Great points!! BTW,"Stanford University reported a sexual assault every two weeks in the three years leading up to Brock Turner’s rape of an unconscious woman in 2015. The elite college reported 26 rapes on campus in 2012, 2013, and 2014, according to data from the U.S. Department of Education, or about one sexual assault every 14 days." Here's the link to the above quote: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/06/08/stanford-had-a-rape-every-two-weeks-before-brock-turner-was-caught.html |
This isn't entirely accurate (or wasn't, 20 years ago, when I attended Stanford), as I know Stanford athletes who were offered a full ride to Harvard but not to Stanford. Regardless, with respect to Brock Turner, it's not just about Stanford's athletic program in general but its swimming program in particular. There is pretty much no other swim program in the country that matches Stanford. If you aren't an Olympic hopeful, you will not make the team. That gives them more of a pass in admissions etc than other programs. Beyond that, though, I don't think it has anything to do specifically with being an athlete, though the swim culture at Stanford in particular could certainly breed entitlement in someone who was predisposed to it. Rapists can be nerds, too, though. |
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/06/07/these-colleges-have-the-most-reports-of-rape/ Three Ivy schools, including Harvard have higher numbers and rates of rape than Stanford. Campus rape seems to be more prevalent at top academic schools, although probably under-reported. |
We use the same word because lack of consent is the defining characteristic. Our society puts a priority on protecting kids who are underage so they are considered to be incapable of giving consent. |
The rape at Stanford was done by a white male. I would bet that the other campus rapes over the last few years (one every 14 days) was probably done by white males. Otherwise, it would have most certainly been on CNN, FOX, and others if they had been minorities. |
Majority of campus rapes are by white males, particularly at top academic schools. |
The only "objects" were his fingers. No penis. No tree branches. Stop making shit up. |
I see. So that lessens the crime in your opinion? |
Stanford has one of the top 10 rates of sexual assault for US colleges and universities. |
And yet there was dirt and pine needles inside her vagina. How did they get there? Did she shove them up there herself before passing out? |
Technically, you are right. If Turner had penetrated her with a baseball bat, it would have been sexual assault with a foreign object. I hope it doesn't bother you that Turner is now a registered sex offender for LIFE. |
Well, bigger schools obviously have more people and that leads to more rapes. What matters is rapes per 1000 students, which the table in the article provides. The worst schools are: Reed Wesleyan Swarthmore Knox Williams Pomona Bowdoin Gallaudet Beloit Dartmouth ..... I don't see Stanford or any of the Ivies in the "top" 25 |
Not true. I am no expert in the matter, but was just looking at the data table provided by WaPo. It's not even in the top 25. The worst offenders seem to be small liberal arts schools. |
Took a couple more minutes, and I don't see any Ivy or Stanford among the first 100 schools ranked by rapes per 1000 students. |
You scrolled past the 1st list in the same link that list Stanford in 1st place. Check again. |
