How difficult is it for a Maryland resident to get into UMCP these days?

You forgot Larry David^^^ between him, David Simon and Henson, UMD alum corner the market on quality television lol.

UMD booster, you are so annoying. And I married into a UMD family, so I'm not speaking out of hate.

No applause just money.

UMD is definitely a LOT harder to get into than I was an MCPS high schooler, but let's not overstate its selectivity. According to Bethesda Magazine, these are the acceptance rates to UMD for the high schools it tracks:

Churchill: 83%
Wootton 72%
Whitman: 77%
WJ: 64%
Blair: 65%
BCC: 52%

SAT. ACT

UMD 1340. 32
Ucla. Not rep. 31
Unc. 1315. 32
Wisc. 1255. 29
Ill. 1345. 29

All other Big ten schools are lower than UMD ,Wisconsin and Ill except NW and Mich.

Interesting!

That explains this

umd is an awesome school that is let down by such an ugly campus and immediate surrounding areas.

if college park looked like boulder,co it would sky rocket past uva and be just a cut below berkeley, michigan, and ucla.

oh and people that say 'its because of md having a rich and educated population' - NJ, Mass, and CT are in MD's caliber when it comes to rich and educated populations but Rutgers, UMass, and UConn are no where near UMD.

UMD's strength is not just because MD has a great talent pool.

They're working on it fast . About 18 projects currently between the school and the beltway including a 4 star hotel and conference center, urban outfitters, whole foods , the Brendan Iribe computer science facility, the Cole complex (the country's most expensive athletic training / entrepreneurial/ physiology research center, a milkboy Philadelphia concert(930 clubish) facility , the Phillips collection gallery, an additional Marriott, the Purple line.

It's going to be unrecognizable in 7 years.

Is there a separate application process for the Scholars program? Once on campus do you take classes only or mostly with other students in the program? It sounds interesting (and affordable!). My DD seems to really be interested in UMCP despite the fact that she's not a person who wants a school with big football, greek system etc. I want her to look at mostly SLACs but I would never want to discourage her from applying to Maryland so I'm interested in hearing more about this option.

No worries it's not!

Being inside the Beltway and two metro lines has got to be the greatest internship/job opportunity situation of any state school. For Petes sake right on campus land UMD has the National Archives, installations of NASA, FDA , USDA , Homeland Security, NOAA , the American Physics Institute, Raytheon and the center for international language study.

yep - have said that here before. agreed. I mean the only other one that's even close would be Cal due to Silicon valley down the road but even then valley jobs are not really accessible as easily though you can bart over to sf.

UW (seattle) is good as well in that regard but it has a narrow focus to due seattle being an 'industry down' (tech).

If they decide to merge the professional schools in Baltimore with UMCP like every other state school in the country UMD IMMEDIATELY becomes a top 4 research institution. Which it already is despite the political "technical" separation.

There is always the community college route. UM pretty much has to admit a student who completed a 2-year degree (with at least a 2.0 GPA) from a local community college. The CCs are not glamorous but they are still good schools with decent facilities. I have known a lot of people who paid their own way and saved a huge amount of money this way. When I was a student at UMBC I found the CC transfers were surprisingly good students who were serious about their work. I was very impressed.

But it doesn't have to be UMDCP, right? It can be any one of the UMD schools, right?
