The fact that we all die doesn't make it silly to grieve a loss, whether that person is someone close to you or just an artist you admired. Not sure why you're on this thread if you're not a fan of Bowie, and feel the need to point out how silly mourning a death is. Post your inane comments elsewhere.

People connect to art. It's a fact of life. Bowie was particularly inspirational to people who didn't feel validation or community in their every day lives. He made it okay on some level to be a weird queer kid at a time when that wasn't okay. He was also a compositional genius with a breadth of work that encompasses critical periods in history - musical and otherwise.

I know a lot of people who are really upset by this. Some of them are musicians who were inspired by his work to create their own work. The thing that is the most moving to me is not just the span of his career and the impact it had on music, but the end, when he created this amazing record in a year, knowing he might be dead by the time it was released. It's beautiful and sad, and your post demonstrates that you don't understand that. Your dismissiveness of someone else's grief makes you a bad person.

I didn't go to either of those performances but I saw him at Live Aid in Wembley in 1985. That stretch of the afternoon was the hardest to get through trying to do a bathroom break - there were so many legends on stage.

Did any of you know he was a fluent German speaker from living in Berlin? He wrote "Heroes" there, and lived in a very (then) working class part of the city. He also made an album for a German movie. Interesting guy in many ways, and so talented.

Does anyone remember a movie from the 80's ( I think it was on HBO) - it took place in Montreal and was about a boy who took up running and decided to run the (I think) Montreal marathon.....it was kind cheesey/coming of age teen movie - but the final scene when he is finishing the race has David Bowie's "Heroes"it made such an impact on me........

I've adored David Bowie for 40 years. He was brilliant in so many ways, and his music is gorgeous. He inspired me, made me feel anything is possible. His last album is beautiful and sad, and now even more so. I'm not ashamed to say I've cried today. He's truly loved by many.

I've cried today, too. David Bowie has been my idol since I was old enough to "get" music - longer than I care to recall. This is a true loss for the world. If you like any kind of music that was produced in the last 50 years, you have Bowie to thank for it. A true innovator, creative and visionary. For all of us who didn't fit in, he told us we weren't alone. And now it feels like we are, a little bit.
