Engagement ring size in your social circle?

28 year old bride here, well 30 now. I live in DC proper and I've been here since '03. I will say my friends' early marriages weren't the norm for the area but youngish brides are out there. I traveled after graduation, lived on my own, etc so I was older for my circle but probably average aged for DC.

None of my friends (late 20s) do engagement rings -- it's an archaic sad/bad custom for people who aren't very good at feminism. Sorry, but that's the truth.

My circle must be small and foreign. Nobody has an engagement ring.

We're mid-late 30's (most of us in the 10th anniversary range, give or take) and the rings are .75 - 1.0 I'd guess. Maybe 1 or 2 have something bigger but that's definitely not common. My group is mostly long term SAHM's though, so I guess our priorities are a little different.[/quote]

ugh. go away.
or other people have more disposable income
i hate these passive aggressive judgments.

Yeah, your priorities ARE different, SAHM above...you know the average carat weight of your friends' rings, and I have no clue, because we don't care, and we don't compare.

I'm also one of the only women in my circle that doesn't have a halo style ring and that always throws me off because the halo makes everything look bigger than reailty. I'd say most of the main stones are probably somewhere around 1ct.

Funny, this is us too. We married 6 years ago and all of our friends have gotten married in the last 2 years--every last woman has had a halo style ring, and I absolutely think that part of the allure is to make the center stone appear larger and to distract from flaws.

Yeah a halo is kind of a white trash ring.

What is a halo ring?

I'm 46 and my engagement ring is a .75 carat solitare, but a high quality stone. I have small hands, so it's a practical size to wear all the time. We got married when I was 31 and we were saving for the down payment On our house. I would have been really mad at him if he spent more $. I'm naturally cheap when it comes to spending money on jewelry or clothes - give me a nice house and fun vacations instead.

Halos, in some form or fashion, have been around for a long time. I guess the people who wore these rings back in the early 1900s must've been white trash, eh?

Mid-30s, DC. My friends generally have huge rings, but many, many halos. My mom is constantly commenting on how big the rings of my friends seem to be - says it seems to be a cultural change + getting married later in life + wanting to keep up with the joneses. When she got married in the mid-1970s, right out of college, she had a chip of a diamond and says that was normal. That said, a lot of her friends have since "upgraded."

My ring is a heirloom multi-stone, about 3.25 total. But it was FREE.

2-3 carats, but most are upgrades. We are all married around 20 years.

Mine is a 1ct round solitaire but perfect quality. DH and I decided we'd rather have smaller and flawless than larger and not as gorgeous. Friends' rings vary from less than a carat to quite large, 2c or more and some with multiple stones. One friend is a rock-climber and very active, so she has an engagement ring where the diamond is actually inset in the ring similar to a man's wedding band.

lol.

The rings I've noticed tend to be large -- 2+ct. Mine is 1.5 and is probably average for our social circle, but it's a very plain solitaire and that is not the norm. I'm 43, but most friends are mid-30s.

Among 'my circle' diamonds are not the majority. Many have other stones. Mine is a ruby. Many have stopped wearing them altogether and just wear the simple wedding ring. We are in our late forties and early fifties and have been married twenty plus years.

I got married before they were popular, but I think many are beautiful.

My BFF has a HUGE ring. That her DH put on their joint credit card and took forever to pay off.

Better than being saddled with a tiny ring. I want a rock and if I had to pay for it, no problem.

DH makes 7 figures now; trust me - if I want a new one its not a problem. Its not a priority for me.

Your spouse makes 7 figures and you have a 0.5 carat? Lol. That is embarrassing.
