Why don't you sell and but in Takoma or Brightwood? You could make a decent profit.

It's tempting.

Go for it.

Definitely. You could make $100-$200k profit and afford private for middle and high depending on how many kids you have.

This and there are several people looking to buy in that neighborhood.

Definitely. There have even been folks prowling the listserv recently asking if anyone wants to sell.

I can't believe anyone would sell in Shepherd Park and move to Brightwood. Takoma, maybe but not Brightwood. And if you have elementary kids why would you give up Deal/Wilson?

Under current rules, if their kids are in Shepherd now, they can move, stay enrolled in Shepherd and continue thru Deal and Wilson.

Technically Pp is correct, the boot after current year after moving doesn't start until next year so now it's still principal discretion. Still, PP would be living in Brightwood. I have lived there and never advise anyone to live there above Shepherd Park unless cost was an issue.

West will feed MacFarland in a few years and become a PK3-5th school.

Correct, but a pp said it feeds to Deal now which isn't the case.

In truth, this has not been formally stated by the mayor who suspended implementation of this recommendation for the current academic year. It may be implemented next year.

I'm always amused that people think it's so easy to swing the cost of an independent education. That "$100K profit" would be gone in 3 years for one child, or in 1.5 years if you have two children.

Put another way, if a couple has two kids, then either mom or dad has to make an extra $100,000 every single year to pay tuition. That's not so easy, or certain. I say that as someone who experienced that the hard way, when the employment picture changed unexpectedly.

That's assuming they don't qualify for financial aid.

If Shephard Park was so committed to building DC into a great city, wouldn't they jump on the opportunity to be part of a new middle school instead of clinging to the wotp schools? How else will we ever get good schools in other neighborhoods if all the strong elementaries feed to Deal and Hardy?

I don't live in SP, but don't blame anyone for trying to get their kids into the best school possible.

The new MS isn't intended for Shephard. That neighborhood or the ones close to it doesn't have their own stand alone MS.

Shepherd ES feeds to Deal b/c it lost its middle school; they literally didn't have another place to go.

When the city builds a stand alone MS, your question will be addressed.

Historically, Shepherd Park residents sent their children to private for middle school and high school. This is why the numbers going to Deal and Wilson are so low. This is slowly changing, however.

It's spelled Shepherd.

OP, the next boundary revision will probably be in 2030, at the earliest, realistically. Mayor, council and DCPS staff hate the process because it distracts from stuff they want to accomplish and it creates big political liabilities and complaints with few upsides.

Think about how different DC and DCPS are in 2015 versus 2000. No-one knows what will happen in 2030 but you can bet that the city and its schools will look very different from today. This is a rapidly changing city, and 15 years is a lifetime in DCPS.

For example, shortsighted posters on DCUM assume that the Deal/Wilson boundaries will be the only big issue in the next boundary review, but I bet it will revolve around more fundamental issues like coordination with charters.

+1 except didn't they make it law when they said next review would be in 10 years?
