Why are rich women skinny?

Anonymous
Agree with a lot said already. Plus, stress leads many people to overeat . Money doesn't solve every problem, but it sure solves many and prevents a lot too. Less stress helps you age better in every way.

Being thin is highly prized and important so lots of effort is put forth to achieve it.

Serious question
How many morbidly obese women do you see on the arm of a rich successful man? I'm talking 250 pound attractive woman?

Being rich has it's set of standards and expectations. No obese woman would be accepted in those circles.

The question was about "rich women" not women married to rich men. It's 2015 and plenty of women get rich on their own.

BTW, It's also easier to be financially successful when you are attractive and not overweight.

My great-aunt - rich by her own efforts and lineage - was the person with money when she married my great-uncle. She's not grotesque, but she's not tiny (probably a 12/14). They're very well-off and live in the DMV. And she's certainly "accepted" in "those" circles - coveted, even.

I'm as feminist as they come, but I disagree with the bolded statement. I'm not talking about financially successful/upper middle class, I mean truly rich. Most very wealthy people are born into money; if women, many also marry into it. I don't think anyone on this thread is distinguishing between women who are rich on their own.

As for why, I think it's because the vast majority of them are expected to be so, whether because they were brought up wealthy or they married into money (or both). Resources help, of course, but when that's considered the only way to be, then you do it.

Because wealthy men have their pick of women and they prefer skinny women.

I'm not skinny but live in upper NW DC and all
Wealthy men in certain circles are married to TINY women.

New poster here. In 10 years, your top 5 list will be very different. Also, you will not keep the weight off forever. You will be older and your husband will still be attracted to younger skinny women, educated or not.

You know, if someone were to say that all fat women were *insert mean word* here, you'd rightly jump on them for it. Why is it ok with skinny women?

It's actually true though. People who are constantly dieting and exercising every day in very little food, i.e. starving themselves, are rarely pleasant.

I highly doubt this. Please name one.

Women who meet the actual definition of both rich and skinny do not eat much, just enough to stay alive and functioning. At that is not expensive, at all.

Not true. We shop at Whole Foods & spend at least $350/week on groceries. Organic fruit & vegetables aren't cheap. Wild-caught salmon can easily be over $20/pound. My almond milk is more expensive than milk. High quality olive oil is more expensive than butter or canola oil. I sent Dh to the store & he couldn't get over a small pack of chicken costing $15.

When dining out, an entree costs the same whether you finish it or not. However, a higher end restaurant is more likely to have smaller portions than Applebee's.

Yes true. If you were truly met the actual definition of "rich" -- which is what this thread is ostensibly asking about -- you would 1) not do you own grocery shopping, a household manager would do to for you, and 2) you would have no idea what your weekly grocery bill was and you would't care.

upper middle class =/= rich. Seriously, they're separate things. I'm upper middle class, I shop at Whole foods, and I don't need to be schooled on the price of purportedly-wild caught salmon at WF during June (answer: it was $29 btw). I have girlfriends who are RICH, who live in whole-floor residences overlooking Central Park. If I quizzed them on grocery bills, they'd blink in confusion. Their nutritonist consults with their cook and the household manager gets it done.

I prefer to be strong and in shape for myself. But then again, I don't worry about my husband leaving me if I gain a few pounds.
