Why are rich women skinny?

Anonymous
Rich people have places to go and people to impress.
Wearing some plus size dress is not going to cut it. If you want to wear designer clothes, you'd better be skinny.

I'm a size 10 and struggle to be anything smaller. I have little kids and rarely have a sitter. My husband works from home or travels but can't usually watch the kids so I cannot work out. Yes I could do it early or late but I'm exhausted.

I can see the difference between how clothes look on me and how they look on someone who is a size 4. Everything looks good when you are skinny. Over size 8 and it's much tougher.

The pressure on the rich is a lot more than on people like me. I'm upper middle class by my standards (HHI around 380 with some family money to help buy a $2 million house) and I'm a stay at home mom who does a little work on the side where nobody sees me. I'm not running in the circles where I need to get dressed up.

My friends say I'm always better dressed than they are and I'm wearing Gap or Old Navy jeans and JCrew shirt. I don't go to fancy parties except a wedding here and there. The pressure on me to lose that dreaded 10 lbs is small. I really want to but I can always start tomorrow or the day after that or the day after that because I'm not going anywhere other than preschool, Safeway or to a friend's house.

What happens if you just aren’t skinny enough?

I’m UMC but a size 8 HHI 1.3 million. I do see how in certain circles I’m just not in. I dress nice but just another size lower would be great. I SAH so it doesn’t matter although thinking of going back.

I see what pp posters said about 1% versus .01%. I don’t know anyone that has a chef. Delivery meals and occasional rental of a cook sure. But not full on chef. I’m curvy, so a I guess I wonder what happens if you just can’t make it skinny enough.

Nothing happens. Skinny is an ideal, not a standard. It's not like you'll get kicked out of your income bracket.

I think Ivanka Trump is a great example of the rich. She's been skinny for her entire llfe- daughter of a billionaire and married to a billionaire. Now she's slumming it with us in DC, working on policy issues under a constant barrage of criticism. And she's gone from a 2 to maybe an 8 or 10. She can't figure out how to dress for her new figure or the ways that an outfit will look on her new frame. Just like I can't wear Loft or BR because they take a cut that is meant for an 8 or 10 and then shrink it to a 2- with cuts meant to flatter a more ample figure but look frumpy on me-- her high end designer clothes take a size 2 cut and make it a size 10. So it looks and fits strange. But she also can't just order Ann Taylor like the rest of DC even though it would fix her current problems.

That's why being larger as a rich lady isnt the same as being larger as a UMC lady. Even if you buy the bigger size it doesn't fit because a size 0 woman is built differently than a size 8 woman- concave in areas where the other is convex. And high end styles tend to focus the eyes on things like collarbones that disappear with extra adipose, so the things that make a woman look alluring literally disappear.

Ivanka Trump—who is 6 ft tall—hasn’t been a 2 since she was in high school.

1-My dh is not attracted to fat women.
2- I can afford to buy very healthy, non-processed foods at the grocery store.
3-I have a nanny so I can go to the gym whenever I want.
4-I have the time to cook healthy foods every night.
5-I am educated, and understand the nutritional value of food.

Very telling that your first comment is your husbands preference.

I want to be attractive to my husband...don't you?

New poster here. In 10 years, your top 5 list will be very different. Also, you will not keep the weight off forever. You will be older and your husband will still be attracted to younger skinny women, educated or not.

Wrong. I am older and still the same weight as 25 yrs ago. Clean diet and weight lifting. My husband (of 25 yrs) is still chasing me.
However, I am a high earner also and have options. So that keeps the power thing level. Life is good!

Is your DH the same weight as 25 years ago?

What if I want to be attractive to your husband. Would that change your calculation?

In other cultures, being overweight is acceptable to men.

Even blue collar Caucasian men want thinner women.

You clearly don’t know many Asians where you are fat unless you weight less than 100lb

My very wealthy MIL is that way - she spends a good amount of time working out (running/daily yoga) and doesn't really eat much. Her body is pretty amazing at well over 60. But she doesn't wear makeup or dye her hair, and would never even consider having work done, so I don't think she's ever really fit in with the rich ladies who lunch.

They don't eat. I work in Development for a non-profit. The wealthy women I steward like to attend events and meet at restaurants, but they don't eat any of the food. They'll order a cup of soup and not finish it. They'll split salads with each other and mostly push the food around their plates. Rarely do I see them drink alcohol, and if they do, it's never more than one glass of wine.

Of course, they have the advantages of time and others doing everything for them, so they can work out. There's definitely a lot of disordered eating, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if pharmaceuticals help curb appetites.

I've noticed that they talk about the weight of others a lot. They'll definitely heap praise on other women for looking slim. They'll comment if they think another woman is too heavy! I haven't heard them say it to anyone's face, but they'll definitely comment behind another woman's back.
