I think OP is half right. A really good looking guy does not need to be "bad" or mean or a jerk. In fact, this would probably hurt him with quality women. But most men are not Tom Brady, or even studly former-laxer investment bankers.

Most guys are average to ugly, and these guys need to get a girl's attention somehow to have a shot. Maybe it's buying a motorcycle, learning to snowboard, or mountain climbing. Maybe it's just being much more confident than people would expect, based on your looks. Or, of course, maybe it's cash.

Mediocre looking men are helped by borderline jerky behavior...or at least cocky. Think Elaine being mildly interested in why Newman was so confident on Seinfeld.

I'm talking about real life interactions, not tinder. I'm talking about getting to know people beyond 5 seconds. Looks are part of a woman's analysis but it's less of a factor than for men. I know bald, fat, or short guys who do well with attractive women. They're not "bad boys" - but they brought something else that planted a seed in her mind. I'm none of those three but some of these guys are doing better than me.
