Bars and dance clubs for over 50 crowd.

yuck!

That place was horrible. In my "younger" years, I'd hear horror stories from older friends who went.

why not just hit a restaurant/bar and hang out?

At 49 - married with two kids, I have no desire to hang out at a club and dance. But if I were single, I wouldn't see the appeal.

At 50 and newly divorced with 3 kids, I can totally see the appeal of having a fun, non-cheesy place to go with a girl friend or two for drinks. No thank you to the Yact Club kind of place, and I've already done the Big Hunt/Black Cat/Cities et al in my 20's. So what's girl to do? Surely there must be some places in DC or Bethesda that have fun happy hours? Or a place to hang out on a Saturday night with friends where you don't feel ancient?

Not a lot of single guys at most country clubs.

This is a great suggestion, for stodgy Republican types. The tough thing is being a left-wing, artsy former punk rock oldster, looking for someplace not stodgy, but not all 21 year olds.

You definitely want to check out contra dancing at Glen Echo.

In Bethesda, you can try Union Jacks on Friday and Saturday nights after 10pm. It is a very unusual crowd for Bethesda -- very diverse racially with many different ages represented. I went a couple of times with groups of friends and while I was older than the majority of the crowd, there were plenty of people my age there, too. I'm 50. In fact, I even met a couple of really good looking, nice men. Union Jacks at the Rio also has a mixed age crowd. I had guys asking me to dance at both locations.

The Harp and Fiddle also has an older crowd. But most of the guys that hang around in a bar over the age of 50 tend to be a little odd -- unless they are there with a group of friends.

The bar at Clyde's Tower Oaks is pretty good on Fridays for happy hour.

For a different crowd, great music, and a dive bar vibe -- check out Hank Dietl's on Rockville Pike on Rockabilly Night. They have some great bands. Their drink and food menu is limited to what you'd get in a Frat house basement, but it's a true departure from the regular bar scene in MoCo.

As other PPs have mentioned, the swing dancing and contra dancing at the Ballroom at Glen Echo are great. Usually they have free lessons at the beginning of the dance. I know several women who met their husbands there. There is no air conditioning -- so the summer dances can be a sweaty nightmare. Fall is a great time to go.

I've meant to go contra dancing at Glen Echo for decades, and didn't realize they still had it. Good idea.

No dancing, but Food Wine & Co. in Bethesda seems to have a lively older crowd at the bar.

If this were a contest, Maryland would win as best for the over 50 crowd.

DC Reynolds on Georgia Avenue in Petworth. My husband and I take our parents there whenever they visit.

How about a salsa club or something like that? I've been to the Havana Club in Baltimore several times with a couple of friends and, as a 40-something, I am probably on the older end of the age-range, but have never felt out of place. There are definitely 20-somethings in tight short dresses and platform heels, but enough 40+ men and women to balance out the vibe. And it's not such a meat-market. The thing with this kind of club, however, is that the better you are at dancing, the more frequently you get asked to dance.
