As often as this comes up in DCUM, I still can't figure out why it's good to have inherited your money from your great-grandfather but embarrassing to have made it yourself. |
That's not how I remember it. It's probably not how people who worked for Lehman Brothers remember it either. And if you thought in 2006 that everybody taking out all of those shady mortgages on expensive houses would be able to pay off the mortgages, then you're a sweet little rose-colored-glasses-wearing optimist. |
Pretty stable? Are you out of your gourd? The economy had tanked BEFORE Pres Obama took office. The housing crisis was in full effect, banks were failing. Get a clue. |
Because of people like this. people who are nouveau generally have no manners, dont know which fork to use, etc etc etc. No etiquette, no social graces, no charm or reserve. As the obnoxious OP proved. If you are looking for why the old guards hate new money, well, you're looking at it. |
| Almost every unemployed person I know has a business degree. |
| I'm secretly in agreement with you, OP. I have worked really hard and made sacrifices to have enough money to be comfortable. I have a younger sibling who has made bad choices -- despite very nearly getting a Ph.d, seems to just want to spend time on his hobbies and is constantly developing new ones and pretending they're a career choice, and I do NOT feel bad for him for being broke. |
My first thought when I saw the post about the penis. I'm surprised that all the women's studies majors didn't catch that immediately. I am much like OP but I am a woman. Although I am routinely told I have brass balls. |
| Oh man, this thread has made me so glad I was raised with money. I have a trust fund and while I respect people who work hard for their money, there's something so incredibly unglamorous and spartan about people who scrimped and saved their money and then gloat over a Mercedes as if they've won an Olympic medal. It's just so very boring and pedestrian and suburban. |
Look at the graph. It was 2008/2009 when that “safety net” was expanded and the increase in SNAP benefits has not subsided - only grown, despite claims that the economy is improving. |
Actually the old guards hate new money because it's a reminder that the privileges they enjoy are ephemeral. |
I'm the PP who posted that comment about making your own success-- and yes, I think becoming successful with the aid of student loans, or whatever assistance one needs, is perfectly acceptable. Wonderful, in fact. Many of the most successful people receive help of some kind to get there, and then they pay it forward when they arrive. Sadly, some people become a success and then just brag about their GL550. I didn't mean to imply that people should become successful with no help from others. Just that hard work and an independent spirit is really what it's all about-- you can't expect to become successful without working hard. That's all. (And what I really wanted to say is that the OP is an ass.) |
| There are people who are so poor that the only thing they have is money. |
What are you talking about? Most old money people have trusts and business to pass down. Of course one day it could go away, but theres a much lower likelihood of that than there is for some new money person working at a desk job under someone else. Keep deluding yourself. |

Sorry you have to rely on the heated seats of your car to keep your soul warm.
I find my happiness in my amazing, handsome loving husband; the home cooked meals we make together at night; and the sweet baby we are expecting. We both have graduate degrees, good jobs, and can afford nice cars -- but those are not the things I would list if I were to brag about why I feel luckily. I just feel sorry for you OP. |
