Sorry you're poor

I find my happiness in my amazing, handsome loving husband; the home cooked meals we make together at night; and the sweet baby we are expecting. We both have graduate degrees, good jobs, and can afford nice cars -- but those are not the things I would list if I were to brag about why I feel luckily. I just feel sorry for you OP.

like something out of a poorly written novel sold at CVS

Better than anything written by OP.

x2. OP's sounds like something written in Edward Scissorhands by one of the horrible neighbors.

As you've stated, you are happy to help those you deem worthy of assistance, but I suspect you aren't a fan of eradicating homelessness and poverty by expanding the safety net. That's the real difference. And if you say you are in favor of eradicating homelessness and poverty, then you are voting for the wrong party.

The safety net has been expanded. Has this ended homelessness and poverty?
Just one example:

The government is not the answer to ending poverty and homelessness. Seems as if expanding the safety net has only expanded the problem.

I wonder if there was some significant economic event that happened around 2006 that might have caused lots of people to lose their jobs and need food assistance.

I wonder if there was some event which happened in late 2008 which caused the rate of handouts to be increased dramatically?

Handouts which, by the way have not increased opportunity, self reliance or allowed people to make it on their own.

Poverty is not solved by giving away hard earned money - it is solved by rewarding risk which then creates opportunity.

Doesn't know which fork to use vs. was born on third base and thinks they hit a triple. Hmmm. Yup, I'll go with the former.

I have a trust fund and while I respect people who work hard for their money, there's something so incredibly unglamorous and spartan about people who scrimped and saved their money and then gloat over a Mercedes as if they've won an Olympic medal. It's just so very boring and pedestrian and suburban.

Yes, it's much more glamorous to have rich parents and a trust fund to squander. Wait -- why, exactly?

Thank you, pp. My favorite post of the evening.
Looks like you have your priorities in order. After all, you can accumulate all the “stuff,” but you can’t take it with you!
Best thing you can do is leave your loved ones with loving memories when you do depart this earth.

Remember those lines when the baby throws up all over you after being up all night.

Not the pp - My kids are both grown and out of the house.
The “throwing up stories” are some of the funniest memories we have. When our family gets together, the conversation almost always winds around to one of the times one of the kids threw up - in the car, at the beach, on Dad, whatever. Their favorite is when DS threw up, and the dog began to eat it. Yeah, TMI, I know.......

Ha Ha! I love this answer. That little graph says nothing about the cause of the increase in SNAP, it could be for a multitude of reasons. Not to mention things are not so black and white as this PP pointed out. Why do you think people need SNAP in the first place!?!?!?!?!?!?

Sorry you didn't choose a major in college that has high paying mid career salary and went with a liberal arts degree that makes you feel smart but pays $30k a year. You should have taken out loans like me and gone to business school. Sorry you didn't take a job fraught with risk and move to the budding new Silicon Valley of nova with a ton of student debt but with hope for the upside. Actually nope not sorry at all. The heated seats in my GL550 warm my soul.

Oh God. This is so embarrassing and nouveau riche. I can't even deal.

As often as this comes up in DCUM, I still can't figure out why it's good to have inherited your money from your great-grandfather but embarrassing to have made it yourself.

I'm pretty sure I will get by in life just fine with out knowing which fork to use.
