Fine. It's not a typo. It's a spelling error. |
If it's about money that isn't there then they won't extend the school year. |
This. If the school year is extended, it will cost MCPS millions. Entire buildings have to be air conditioned. Thousands of hourly employees will have to be paid. Furthermore, how about all the years MCPS went beyond the 180 day mandate due to few snow days? The winters of 10-11 and 11-12 didn't have any snow days, so that's 8 extra days of school right there. Over the course of a child's years in MCPS it more than evens out. In the end, count on ONE day added. No way will schools open beyond Friday June 13. Mark my words! |
Then why have the stipulation for extended days if they are never going to abide by it. Doesn't teach our kids well now does it? |
Our school year starts the third week of August, and the state exams for elementary and middle school are being taken right now -- that's right, March 7th! |
Who said "never going to abide by it"? MCPS has to apply for a waiver from the state. They may or may not get the waiver, for some or all of the days. |
I am pretty sure that the exams the Canadian PP is talking about are not the same as the tests MCPS elementary and middle school students are taking right now. I assume that the Canadian exams in June are tests of the student; the MSAs (as you know) are tests of the school, as required by No Child Left Behind. |
Please post a year they requested a waiver and was denied? |
It's never happened, therefore it never will happen. |
Right. Our kids have been taking the tests of the school/system off and on through the year. The exams I'm referring to are high school final exams. Our kids get 195 instructional days per year. This year we started September 3 and finish June 26th. Mind you, schools here don't close due to weather conditions. Buses may not run but schools are open and teachers are expected to show up. I don't understand why parents wouldn't want their kids to get the classroom hours in. |
I truly hope this is the year though. On top of the days missed there were too many delays as well. |
We have a different Superintendent then the last time a waiver was applied for. He may choose not to do it at all. |
I suspect MCPS will request a waiver for 2 days (Feb. 13-14), but not all 4 that we are over our limit.

I am doing the "NO WAIVER" chant!!! Ridiculous to even think about doing it. The kids need to be in school. Too many days were missed. |
