Reading from Canada. When does your school year start? We go from the first week of September to the end of June every year. Used to be the last week of August. Exams are written in June, learning still takes place. If they've missed enough time to extend the year, then clearly the time is needed.
Our school year starts the third week of August, and the state exams for elementary and middle school are being taken right now -- that's right, March 7th!
I am pretty sure that the exams the Canadian PP is talking about are not the same as the tests MCPS elementary and middle school students are taking right now. I assume that the Canadian exams in June are tests of the student; the MSAs (as you know) are tests of the school, as required by No Child Left Behind.
Right. Our kids have been taking the tests of the school/system off and on through the year. The exams I'm referring to are high school final exams. Our kids get 195 instructional days per year. This year we started September 3 and finish June 26th. Mind you, schools here don't close due to weather conditions. Buses may not run but schools are open and teachers are expected to show up. I don't understand why parents wouldn't want their kids to get the classroom hours in.
