It isn't up to the school board, it is up to the state.

Also, make sure that students have enough time to do homework, tests, makeup work etc.

They should extend one day for every snow-day!

The kids in high school will be having finals that last week. My daughter is not happy. She only consoles herself that Fairfax is going until June 24.

Reading from Canada.

When does your school year start? We go from the first week of September to the end of June every year. Used to be the last week of August. Exams are written in June, learning still takes place.

If they've missed enough time to extend the year, then clearly the time is needed.

The county school board has to SEEK a waiver from the state.

This.

It's really tough for the HS students to cram everything in.

Exactly. There is little to nothing taught the last week of school, and that is true for all grades.

You are all idiots. If school ended on June 12th, those few last days would have not had a lot yes. June 10-12th, correct? But if school ends on June 19th, you are telling me that they are not going to do ANYTHING from June 10-19th. Every school, every teacher? No tests, no homework, nothing? They will just sit around and look out the window. No, this gives teachers a chance to add more days to the semester. Fit the curriculum in and makes sure the kids understand. Middle and High schools have to have this time. There is always things to learn in elementary.

I honestly CAN NOT STAND parents that do not put education first. Your kids emulate you and your whiny attitude about a few more days of school. Guess what? It isn't a few more days. It is the REQUIRED days. It shows on every MCPS the calendar and snow day make-ups. There is no reason to complain. Just shut up already.

Yes - extend the school year and cover the lessons that were missed. Otherwise, the message i am getting from the state is that school is not important and your kid, by missing a full week, isn't missing much. And the MD rule about making up days - ha ha! We fooled you!!! Silly tax payer - you know we don't need to follow our own guidelines! bring on more snow!

For older kids, if there are supposed to be 2 maths tests this quarter there still will be. It would be very hard gradewise to only have 1 high weighted test in one quarter..

They extended the school year until the 19th. The 3rd semester will get pushed back 3 days.

I truly don't understand the mentality on this board of so many parents who don't think school is a priority. There are always parents saying schools should be cancelled for every little snowflake and now some parents are saying the lost days shouldn't be made up. If the US was far ahead of every other country in education I would get it, but we are not. No wonder our kids aren't the brightest bulbs.
