MCPS pls don't extend the school year!!

If there is no waiver, the kids would be in school until June 19th. That is wayyyyy to long. Yes, I understand they've lost instructional days, but, really, by June it's all over anyway. Last year, it felt like we were all crawling to the finish line after Memorial Day. I just can't imagine what it would be like to still be in school until the 19th!!!

Getting nervous about this b/c it seems that the principal is preparing us for this eventuality.

just don't send your kid

Please extend the school year! I can do without paying for one week of summer camp.

If they do extend, I wonder if camps will open as scheduled or a week later. What do you think? I agree with PP.

What nonsense is this? Please extend the school year and ensure that the curriculum is adequately covered.

Also, make sure that students have enough time to do homework, tests, makeup work etc.

They should extend one day for every snow-day!

I would assume it's case by case. The ones being held in school would have to open a week later.

It can be really hard on the teachers and, consequently, the kids to have to cram learning in when there is not enough time. This is more of a problem at the high school level.

Yes -- extend the school year! I would rather have my kids in school learning what is supposed to be covered than send them to an extra week of camp.

Just don't send them. They aren't going to be doing any learning those days anyways, right before summer starts. Grades will be in, the sun will be shining. I have no intention of sending the kids if school goes longer.

I don't understand this mentality. Seems very 'rules are for everyone else' to me.

Why, OP?

If you think your children are not learning, don't send them. No one will care.

If you think they will learn something, socialize, etc and that it will save you camp money, then send them to school.

It seems logical to me that snow days should be made up, particularly at the high school level.

You are an idiot. Your kids would be mortified if they missed the entire last week of school.

I too WANT the extension. Have the kids learned anything since winter break? It has been 3-4 school days each week. So much learnng was lost with the delays too. Many kids go to school year round. Our kids can go one more week in June. They will be fine.

Of couse since the teachers have no idea what will happen at the end of the year, they are currently condensing to stay on schedule...amking the extra time at teh end of the year not the equivalent of having the days when they are supposed to be. For older kids, if there are supposed to be 2 maths tests this quarter there still will be. It would be very hard gradewise to only have 1 high weighted test in one quarter..

To whom do we write about this matter? The school? State delegates? MoCo Council? Does anyone know?
