The campus at UMD is really very nice, very large (as is true of all major public universities) but great. I am not sure why it receives less attention than the VA schools but no reason to ignore it, be a good or excellent place for most students in the area.

I don't find the architecture at Maryland interesting. All the main buildings look like bigger versions of the state rest stops along 95.

It's Georgian architecture .
Without the UVA plantation layout.

The Maryland campus looks far more like something you'd find in Alabama than does U.Va. Again, just very bland, only difference is it's full of JAPs from New Jersey and Long Island.

If it were different, locals would be prouder of College Park but it barely registers around here.

^^^ lol. The ACC is freaking out that Umd divorced it. It's all angry like a jilted spouse . Kicking and screaming That it has been cut in half geographically, lost its biggest TV market , lost its highest funded research institution, lost its access to Washington DC , and is left with a bag of dicks schools that nobody cares about.

MARYLAND PRIDE
most national championships 45
Most Nobel alumni
Most Pulitzer alumni
Most Academy award alumni
Most World changing and cultural influence alumni

It's just better!

When you say Virginia Tech to the average joe the first thing they think of is dead students and cops.

Sad but true.
I also think of how is it possible that VT has zero national championships in any sport and zero Pulitzer or Nobel alumni.
Instead... Vt has had a student massacre , ugly architecture , dingy locale, a beheading in the dining hall, a cop shot in the face , and a alumnus who massacred and wounded at fort hood.

The worst

The fact that some idiot from Maryland would post this on Thanksgiving underscores why your school commands so little respect. No class whatsoever. None. Your parents must be really proud.

It's NU, not NW, and frankly NW would never get invited if they hadn't been there from the beginning. They really don't belong, but the bar for kicking a school out is, as it should be, different from the bar for letting a school in in the first place.

The big ten just invited and accepted Johns Hopkins .
The big ten is as much about research funding as sports. Hopkins is the #1 research funded institution in the United States. UMD , when the law and medical schools are merged as they are at almost all schools is 8th in the nation with approx 1.2 billion per year.

They added Hopkins for just 1 sport.

I went to VT, but even from an unbiased standpoint this is pretty tasteless. VT has a lot going for it, and I know many people will agree. Why was it necessary to stoop to this level? To make yourself feel better about UMD? They're both wonderful schools.

True.. But they are in the CIC,,, which is far more valuable and lucrative and dwarfs the sports money.
