Locals equate UMD with about GMU. Not fair maybe, but that's what happens.

umd dude is back!
Doesn't matter. There's equal chance that my kids or any of their friends will go to UMD or GMU: zero.

GMU is much more highly regarded than UMD.

If you live in Maryland ~ then HS counselors will probably be able to tell you if your kid can get into UMD. Not at all easy, but not much mystery. Virginia admissions are more erratic, less predictable (that's all it is -less predictable) Causes more discussion/anxiety. And, of course, privates -all the different ones and various levels of prestige will get a lot of discussion)

And 15:12 is WRONG. Maryland is rated #62 vs GMU at #141. That's a high difference (even if you want to squabble about USNews)

UMD is an excellent public school. Among public schools in Va/MD, I would think easily second to UVA though some might think Va Tech stronger -- GMU not close. The campus at UMD is really very nice, very large (as is true of all major public universities) but great. I am not sure why it receives less attention than the VA schools but no reason to ignore it, be a good or excellent place for most students in the area.

^^^ only reason Umd is not top 30 in US news is that the law and medical schools are administratively separated from cp. if combined will be a top 5 research funded school.

My husband and I met there, and have very fond memories. I think its great for certain majors, and will definitely encourage our kids to look there. Agree with another PP that it takes somewhat big personalities to feel at home there, but there are so many niches and opportunities.

Anonymous wrote:Umd is a school for big personalities with big dreams. If your DS/DD is a shrinking violet, it is not the place . Umd alumni make up like half of espn. Connie Chung, Kiren Chetry, Heidi Collins , Juliana Rancik, Larry David, Jim Henson , Sergi Brin, Stenny Hoyer, Dianne Weist, Karen Allen, Gale King, Carly Fiorina, Kevin Plank..
Are all Umd grads... Lots of broadcasting and entrepreneur types and inventor / creator types . Not really the school for shrinking violet conformer types or people who are easily depressed.
