How much wear and tear should my Burberry quilted jacket have after 4 years/ can I return?

Having been very overweight once, OP, I can tell you that overweight people are very hard on their clothes. Clothes stain and they get strained and they just don't last that long. You need to consider that the jacket lasting you four years was a very good life span. No, it should not have been expected to last longer.

Now that you are thinner, your clothes may last longer.

Maybe you weren't buying the right size.

Not a question of fit or size. When you are fat, your body rubs against itself. Your clothes wear out.

Thanks for turning this into a post about weight.

How does mentioning weight turn this into all about weight?

You aren't very bright, are you? What were you doing, exclusively as an overweight woman, that stained your clothes? And why would your clothes strain on you if they fit?

Anonymous wrote:I have a black Burberry quilted jacket that I purchased from Nordstrom in the fall of 2009. I have worn it a good amount over the last 4 years, especially in the fall each year. I've lost a good amount of weight and the jacket has gone from being very fitted to baggy. I told my husband that I was going to try to sell it on ebay and buy a new one in a smaller size, and he pointed out that my jacket is in terrible condition. I looked at it more closely and he is right- it just hasn't held up well at all! The stitching has come undone in a ton of places, and there is a lot of pilling. I'm pretty shocked that it would look so badly- this was a $500 jacket. Any chance that Nordstrom would take it back and give me a new one (in the same size- I don't expect them to give me a new one in a smaller size!) or is this normal wear and tear after four seasons of use?

OP, this is plain and simple thievery. Sell it on Ebay or get a seamstress/tailor to repair it (or see if it is worth it.)... but asking for a new one after 4 years is just criminal...

I bought a light weight quilted jacket from Burberry too and was shocked at how delicate it was... The threads popped out and were hanging all over. A friend Of mine had the same issue...this was a few years ago but the popping threads happened immediately after I purchased and I have to say I was very disappointed because for the money you would think there would be exceptional craftsmanship. Also, to add insult to injury my sister in law bought a knock off of the same style coat from target and it wore like iron! I don't think it makes someone wrong or a troll if they expect something to last with normal use and at those prices. They should replace or repair. I plan to find out from the manufacturer what they can do for me.

I wrote the post saying that I had a similar problem and for the weight conversation...neither me nor my colleague were overweight...super thin actually.

Congrats, you've fallen victim to thinking that buying overpriced designer clothing will last you.

Instead of going to Nordstrom, why don't you go to Burberry? They are the ones who made the jacket.

But, FWIW, I think the lifespan is probably about right. If you think about it, you spent about $125 per season for the jacket and that's pretty reasonable. It sounds like you've gotten a lot of enjoyment and wear out of the jacket. It is just time for a new one -- it is even too big (congratulations!).

it's hard to see the harm in bringing your case to nordstrom and burberry and seeing if they will do anything. four years is not that long for a coat to last. and if they're selling themselves as quality, luxury brands, they should fall over themselves to make sure you're satisfied. plus they should be aware when their customers AREN'T happy.

or else not - and you can decide if you feel like spending another $700 or whatever on a coat with a pretty short lifespan.

4 YEARS? Are you kidding? 4 MONTHS would be pushing it to even venture into the "years" made me laugh out loud.

I disagree. 4 years for something you only wear part of the year is not all that long. and i say this as someone who is willing to go out and replace clothes on a fairly regular basis. coats should last that long, especially expensive ones.

Wow OP, you have some NERVE to think you can return an item after four years. It's because of people like you that a lot of companies have changed their return policies for the worse.

Just because she can, doesn't make it right.

Agreed - can you imagine working at Nordstrom's and having to deal with all of the scammers who try to get something for nothing? I hear it is the same at Sephora. They bring in a totally empty bottle and say, "Give me my money back; I must be allergic." Its actually stealing.
