How much wear and tear should my Burberry quilted jacket have after 4 years/ can I return?

Did you even take good care of it?

Give Burberry a call. Seriously.

It's not the brand, you sweet idiot. It's the material, coatings and stitching used for the coat that indicate its durability.

My Barbour coat will last a lifetime because it is heavy canvas coated with their thorn-proof wax thingie (I wax it regularly, and Barbour can darn any holes in it).
But a little quilted jacket? The brand name is not magic, dearie It can't turn a light fabric coat with a fragile single-stitch diamond pattern into the kevlar jacket of the century.

Sigh. Another consumer puts their hard-earned money into something completely worthless.

I have a Barbour quilted jacket. I have had it since 1997.

Oh yes you do.

I bought dd a pair of boots and they split open after less than one year of use. I went to Nordstrom to ask how long they're supposed to last they told me to bring it back. After inspecting the item they offered me a refund or a new pair of boots.

This is totally different than wearing a jacket for four years. Yes, reasonably shoes should last more than 6 months.

I've lost a good amount of weight and the jacket has gone from being very fitted to baggy. I told my husband that I was going to try to sell it on ebay and buy a new one in a smaller size, and he pointed out that my jacket is in terrible condition. I looked at it more closely and he is right- it just hasn't held up well at all! The stitching has come undone in a ton of places, and there is a lot of pilling. I'm pretty shocked that it would look so badly- this was a $500 jacket. Any chance that Nordstrom would take it back and give me a new one (in the same size- I don't expect them to give me a new one in a smaller size!) or is this normal wear and tear after four seasons of use?

In my opinion, returning worn merchandise should involve jail time.

Hi OP - 4 years does seem like a pretty reasonable lifespan for this sort of jacket. But it's hard to see the harm in sending an email to Nordstrom or Burberry and asking them how long they think the jacket should hold up. It's also hard to see the harm in putting it up on eBay, so long as you are very explicit about the flaws.

And if you like it, then sure, buy another one. $500 every four years doesn't seem like crazy money.

I have a Burberry quilted jacket and it looks pretty good after three years. There is some loose stitching but overall looks good. Honestly, I have regretted buying mine. It was way too expensive for what it is. I prefer my Lands End quilted jacket over the pricey Burberry one any day, plus the cheaper LE one is machine washable.

Just because she can, doesn't make it right.

I know someone who does this. I won't give details but it's an abuse of nordstroms generous return policy. It's basically stealing.

I agree pp. People abuse Nordstrom's return policy and it is unethical and low class. I have a first cousin who brags about doing this. She also likes to buy books at Costco, read them, and then return them.

This reminded me of some socks I bought in Clark's last month. They come with a 20 year warranty,'they do!
Holes, whatever, incredible.

Another point that has been overlooked -- you say that you have lost a great deal of weight.

Having been very overweight once, OP, I can tell you that overweight people are very hard on their clothes. Clothes stain and they get strained and they just don't last that long. You need to consider that the jacket lasting you four years was a very good life span. No, it should not have been expected to last longer.

Now that you are thinner, your clothes may last longer.

You'd have a better chance with the manufacturer. Nordstrom is not taking that back.

I worked in retail one upon a time. This reminds me of a lady that wanted to return clothing that shrunk in the wash because she " forgot to read the care instructions."
