I was a wild and crazy 15 yr old, did so many stupid things. My mother had the option of sending me away, she had family in another country, but there was no way she would have. She didn't give up on me and loved me relentlessly. That is being a mom.

I turned out fine, went to UVa, and have done very well in life.

Now as a mother myself, I can understand why my mom did it, there is no way I could give up on my children because I love them so much I would give my life for them. It's easier to give up and walk away, it's much harder to love unconditionally.

This woman loved herself more than her daughter but fine some people are just ultimately selfish, but then she punished her daughter in such a cruel way. It's heartless.

She went to Russia to her father's voluntarily - she just didn't know how long she would be staying.

Lots of kids get sent to boarding school or wilderness programs or the other parent when they are out of control, or they end up in juvenile detention or a group home with CPS.

If she was here, her life might be just as bad or worse. It sounds like she is getting some good life experiences, she has a job, she has a roof over her head, she is safe. In most cultures, teens aren't treated like little children so older teens aren't seen as needing an adult with them all the time. It is probably pretty normal where she is for a late teen to have a job, to be out on their own, to look after themselves.
