Oh... Black woman here!

OP here again (also a BW)
I understand your point PP...we all say and think some things (right and wrong) at home and in private....
HOWEVER, these are things that were said at businesses she owns...are alleged patterns of behaviour that colored her behaviour and patterns of behaviour in HER BUSINESS.
this came out of deposition taken as part of a lawsuit alleging sexual and racial discrimination...
NO one is suing her cause she said something to her neighbor or said out loud to herself when she was home alone....there is a big difference there..

13:28 here... I mean who really cares that she said nigger and she discriminates against people. I don't! I don't buy her products, don't watch her shows and I think she is a big fat phony. I've been called nigger and worse by a whole ton of people. I've also been discriminated against at school and at work. When people call me a nigger (or in today's lexicon an Obama supporter) my response has always been, "really! If you say so. I'm a married mother of two beautiful DS's, a homeowner, a partner in my firm and we have a summer home. If that's how niggers role. I'm cool!"

When my former employer discriminated against me. I documented, sued and won. I took a picture of me holding my check in front of my old building.

We give power to that word by the outrage that it causes. Paula Deen means nothing to me.

I am the OP and I don't understand your point.
YOu are saying that if she says Nigger that is her business..then u go on to say that you were discriminated against and won...
Welllll the whole thing is about a discrimination lawsuit...so I am missing what your point is...
What are you saying that is so different than what I was saying?
Please to explain ??

Nothing to explain really other than I don't care what Paula Deen says or does. My only point in writing all that was if you call me that name, I won't care. If you discriminate against me, I'll retaliate. No one else needs to be outraged by it. It's a media circus... and for what? Because it's Paula Deen; people are really SHOCKED and OUTRAGED by her behavior? Really? If the people were discriminated against, I hope they win. But listserv and blog posts about how outraged people are that PAULA DEEN said and did those things are stupid. People say that word everyday. People discriminate everyday. Don't care about the word and pinecone the people that discriminate against you.

You realize that the reason discrimination works is because people like you say it doesn't mean anything to me because it didn't happen to me personally or affect me directly. That's insane. A lot of people's previous giving-a-shit allowed you to sue your previous employer and win. Because other people cared about what happens to you and people before you and people after you. You are utterly bizarre. It's a media circus because people give a damn, and they should.

I am not the poster to whom u are speaking...but dang...I think u are wayyy off the mark...

100% agree!

How so? You think anti-discrimination laws and such were created because no one cared?

Yeah, I'm with you.

I'm sorry that the poster above isn't shocked -- I wish this behavior was SO uncommon that hearing about it was like seeing a unicorn in the wild. That said, I think this info is "news" to people like me -- white, middle-class mom who has never once used that word and is still stunned to hear it.

I am the OP who is not surprised...
Not to be funny -- but you are a white middle class woman...not surprised that you ARE surprised
I have been black all my life..yea
NOT SURPRISED

I'm not quite sure what PP's comment means except to perhaps say that her life experiences are different than my belief system and values. But for what it's worth I'm upper class white, very well-educated and I have not a bigoted bone in my body and find this kind of language reprehensible and I'm surprised that Paula Deen would use such language. But then I was shocked by Michael Richard's comments. And Alice Walker's in her new book. And Mel Gibson's. I guess there are a--holes everywhere but the "N word" is simply not used by my family, my friends, my children, the schools I have been affiliated with or anyone else in my life and I would turn on the person and confront them if I heard it used by anyone.

That word conveys a whole hell of a lot about the one who utters it and absolutely nothing about the one to whom it is directed.

My family is from Georgia and older uncles and such still use those terms on occasion. I don't condone it, but for people who grew up in the rural South in that time period, it was totally, totally normal. So no, if the Deen family used that word, I would not be the least bit surprised. The real question is does this woman suing them deserve to be compensated for hearing the Hierses/Deens use the n-word on occasion.

Ah, wrong. Also from Georgia. Only certain kinds of white families (e.g., lower class, uneducated, ignorant, or just nasty pigs) would use that word commonly in the 1940s, 50s, etc... Educated people with class did not. Even then it was a dirty word used for shock and denigration because the speaker needed to feel better about his/her place in the world.

IMO, upper class white folks are even WORSE racists than lower class ones, because they are the ones who truly held the power to oppress black people. All those judges, police officers, politicians etc who are responsible for the horrible treatment under Jim Crow? I'm sure they considered themselves "educated people".

Please refrain from blanket statements. We don't all hate ya'll..

Lady -- take a step back.
I am the PP you are speaking to...
Yes, my life experience is very different than yours..Which is why I am not surprised that you are surprised that this happened.
Yes, as a black woman I have been called "Nigger" plenty of times in my life, don't know any black american person who has not (tho i bet this rare being does exist).
I bet you have never been called that -- and you say would never say...so that is why YOU are surprised
And if you think every person you know has never used that word...that some kid in your kid's school has said it to some other kid...then lady you are not only surprised...but you are also DELUSIONAL.
I most certainly do not think that all white people are racist or use that type of language...but the content of your response shows that you must be living under a rock or truly in denial about the pervasiveness of racism in this country.
And I am also not surprised about that!

You know what is irritating about these types of reactions and comments.
As an AA I have to deal with, steal myself against, recognize the existence of this mess all the time.
1 incident pops up in the media and folks, like yourself, probably well-meaning and sincere, act so surprised, outraged and up and arms..."well, i never," (clutching your pearls)...

OK look. The alternative is that we look away and tell you it's not our problem, because really, it isn't our problem. If you get called names every single day, that sucks for you. No one calls me anything.

But you know how that changes? When people like me (when I'm done clutching my pearls) go home and see this on the news with our kids and we say, "It's a horrible word with horrible connotations and I'll beat you senseless if I ever hear you use it."

This -- This right here is golden... a white lady getting indignant about a black person's being over your "surprise and shock' over some stuff they deal with on a regular basis.
Try this...try realizing that this kind of stuff happens all of the time...Just try being aware...
shock and awe is indicative of nothing...except you being shocked and awed and doing absolutely nothing till this happens again...

You know what is irritating about these types of reactions and comments.
As an AA I have to deal with, steal myself against, recognize the existence of this mess all the time.
1 incident pops up in the media and folks, like yourself, probably well-meaning and sincere, act so surprised, outraged and up and arms..."well, i never," (clutching your pearls)...
when you know what...get a grip cause i have to deal with this s*** EVERY.SINGLE.STINKING.DAY.

Wow -- if you think the options you presented are the only ones available...then you are worse off than I originally thought...

People ARE doing something. People are expressing outrage. Why are you pissed about that???
