Ah, wrong.  Also from Georgia.  Only certain kinds of white families (e.g., lower class, uneducated, ignorant, or just nasty pigs) would use that word commonly in the 1940s, 50s, etc...  Educated people with class did not.  Even then it was a dirty word used for shock and denigration because the speaker needed to feel better about his/her place in the world.

IMO, [b]upper class white folks [/b]are even WORSE racists than lower class ones, because they are the ones who truly held the power to oppress black people. All those judges, police officers, politicians etc who are responsible for the horrible treatment under Jim Crow? I'm sure they considered themselves "educated people". [/quote]
