Thanks for this suggestion. When you say metallic -- do you mean silver-ish? And what color stockings would you wear with them?

My vote -- regardless of the shoe, NO stockings.

Tell me more, PP. If no stockings, surely there needs to be some undergarment. Do spanx come in like, half-length?

these days there are very strictly defined schools of thought on the use of pantyhose. more and more people are going against them. it's really not a big deal one way or the other though, unless you're wearing open-toed shoes.

OK. I think I'm going with these in either the metallic or the black. What do you think?

the kate spades are really expensive, don't you think? and i don't think her shoes are comfortable or well made (i had the heel break on one pair last year)

I like the pair from Nordstrom's, PP. But I don't like Talbots shoes because I don't think they are well made, so I don't buy them.

I don't know. I feel like I'm in a whirl of shoes and dresses. The mean PP's comment about the blue dress has me reconsidering the Aztec one from Neiman's. I still have it.

Yes, the Kate Spades are expensive, but they look nice and I thought I could wear them again.

I so dislike these large family & friends galas. Where you see people that haven't seen you in awhile? And you know that not all of them really like you? And they're going to talk about you? (her dress looked cheap, her shoes looked brassy, she gained weight; she lost weight; her hair . . . ) I know all of that goes on and I alwasy feel self-conscious. I shouldn't let it get to me. But it does.

Maybe I just need a nap.

i'm the nordstrom shoe pp and i get where you're coming from -- i hate those events, too, for some of the same reasons. all the more reason, i think, that you should go for a dress you LOVE because you will feel more confident and people will get a different feeling from you. to be honest (and i hope not mean) the talbots dress doesn't wow me, but the aztec dress doesn't either, and looks like it might not be dressy enough for an evening bat mitzvah. have you looked at the nordstroms website for dresses? they have some very nice, very basic, and reasonably priced options, i think. do you know what the parents of the girl are wearing? this is a break from the everyday, so hope to be able to help!

Classic and beautiful, but so expensive. More so than the dress, I think. Ouch.

Hi OP. Judging by your posts here, you seem like a really nice person. Personally, I think that both the Talbots and the Aztec dress are pretty, appropriate and likely quite flattering given what you've shared about yourself. So I say you should pick whichever one makes YOU feel the prettiest and most comfortable, and you should go and have a great time with your family. As for the people who may talk about you? Screw 'em. There are always meanies in every crowd, including this one. You can't please everyone all of the time. Just focus on feeling good and having fun and the rest will follow!

P.S. I'm the one who posted above that I love the Kate Spade pumps but am a bit too budget-conscious to pay that kind of price. But they're lovely, so I say if you're up for the splurge, go for 'em. If not, I really like the Nordstrom ones a few posts back. But that's just me . . . .

Nope. (I don't want her to take the heat for my comment.)
