Neighbor's generator is LOUD

Wow I have a guy about 300 feet from me he hase a flowmaster muffler(car muffler) on his geney I asked him to shut it down last night because inmy bedroom the db reading was 55 needless to say if the cops didn,t show up someone would have been hurt. Jjjust because you have the ability don,t give you the right.

Not that poster, but if you are annoying your neighbors with something as loud as a lawnmower, when you know everyone's got their windows open to get some cooler air, then at the very least you should offer fridge space, fresh brewed coffee, or something to make up for it.

Seriously, something that loud can cause hearing damage in just 8 hours. Not cool at all.

Agree that a generous offer of fridge space is nice, but honestly it does not make up for being kept up all night. In my neighborhood in Arlington it's very rare that a power outage lasts long enough for the stuff in the fridge to go bad anyway. If you are someone who insists on running loud equipment late at night, you should be living out in the country where there's nobody to disturb. (And obviously the municipalities agree, hence the noise ordinances.)

Not the PP's but I'll take a noisy generator with a considerate neighbor taking in our food (and anything else we need) over no generator any day. We were grateful for our neighbor's generator. This is the second or third time they have taken our food and anything else we needed. They would have run us a line if we were next door (which they did do for others) but we are across the street and we couldn't figure out how to do it safely. Its time limited. After about 8-10 hours our fridge food and freezer food was getting ready to turn (which is when we brought a lot of it to the neighbors, pitched some and kept some hoping to eat it - what we left in the fridge by night two was moldy/gross - mainly veggies and I should have brought it to the neighbors but didn't want to take up that much room in case someone else needed it. We'll be buying a generator at some point.

Our solution for trying not to annoy the neighbors is to share the generator. It is strong enough to power our fridge, stand alone freezer and sump pump plus the same 3 items for the neighbors on each side. Everyone puts up with the noise so they don't lose their food and flood the basement. Yes it is loud. But since the neighbors are getting the benifit no one gets upset. Luckily we have only had to use it when the weather was ok (after storms) so ac or heat wasn't a problem.

In any case, it's all well and good to share a generator if you agree to it in advance, but it's NOT reasonable to just assume that all neighbors will be OK with generator noise in exchange for using the generator. The power rarely goes out long enough around here to lose your stuff, and when it does there has usually been at least a few days of warning so you could eat through your perishables, turn down your fridge temp, and stock up on ice. On the other hand, a whole day of close-up generator noise can make you lose your mind, let alone even trying to sleep.

We still heard it very well as well as several other generators and we fully supported them. If you don't like the noise, close your windows and find some white noise. After 8 hours our fridge was not cold when we opened it and would not have lasted much longer. As it was, I still had to pitch half of our stuff as it wasn't frozen anymore and we couldn't eat up all the food even with the help of our neighbors. There was no ice to be found around here (nor generators or we would have gotten one). You are very selfish. All of the neighbors who had one offered a line for a fridge to whom ever was closest to them who didn't have a generator - a few neighbors got several offers (none of our next door had one). When we get a generator we will absolutely share and our neighbors fully support it.

My neighbors new generator registered 80db at my bedroom window last night. He could easily relocate it. He has it positioned between our two house on a concret pad. When I politely asked him about simply moving the generator 10 feet to the right, so that it could sit in his back yard on the grass, he was extremely hostile and pretty much to me to go "F" myself. I just don't get.

It seems like dc has a noise control law, I posted it below. Can't those that are offended just simply call the cops and ask for the law to be applied?

If the noise exceeds local ordinances, call the police.

If it doesn't, get some earplugs if you must (I deal w/ my neighbors' noise) ... we'll be adding a nat. gas generator during a renov., they are much quieter now (72 dB @ 20' IIRC).

To the tough guy above who was ready to threaten violence over a 55dB generator, you really need some social skills, anger management, and some ear plugs.

No, dumbass, they do not have to turn it off at night and they will not. There is no point in running a generator all day only to turn it off at night. That defeats the entire purpose of having a generator. We do not have one. We should get one. So should you. If you cant handle the conditions (including the noise of a generator) go to a hotel.

You people are hilarious. You complain about rain, you complain about a few days without a/c, and then complain that your neighbor has a solution but you don't. It makes too much noise.

The truth is so much simpler. You are mostly selfish people who believe if you don't get, no one gets. You begrudge your neighbors who may get some relief from the outage because you don't get the same. Then both sides try to justify their arguments as being right and good because their side is the side of common courtesy.

If you have a generator, you won't offer your neighbors any help because it isn't your fault they don't spend money to prepare for the weather. Just as selfish.

(Before you ask, I live in a small apt that lost power. I do not have a generator and I'll spare you the details of how I got through the days with no a/c.)

what a bunch of whiners. my neighbor has a generator. it never occurred to me once to complain about the noise, I was more thinking how jealous I was of his big diesel generator. private property rights are what they are, he can do what he wants on his property (provided my own rights are not truly interfered).

Please also consider that some people may really need the generator running all night. We told our next door neighbors, who are mean to begin with, that we would be running the generator all night because we had a guest staying with us that needs to run a piece of medical equipment all night. That was still met with slight disgust. Can't win I guess.

Hi, "don't get (it)" guy here,

At around 11pm, we moved a mattress from our guest room onto our living room floor. In using this solution,, I finally got to sleep sometime between 4 and 4:30 this morning. My daughter slept with her teddy bear on her head in an attempt to shield the noise at least that's how I found her this morning while I was waking her for summer camp.

Noise canceling headphones helped a lot, but we're awkward to sleep with.

He's using the generator for his refrigerators, entertainment center and his A/C.

In the past I've taken care of his house and pet while he was away on vacation.

His attitude with this has left me dumbfounded.

wow you are a piece of work. so your neighbors spends a lot of money on a generator so he can power his stuff when the power is out, and you expect him NOT TO USE IT WHEN THE POWER IS OUT???? WTF?
