| Our next-door neighbor is running a generator about 15 feet from our bedroom window, which is of course open because we have no AC. I had no idea how LOUD those things are! It's way louder than a lawnmower or leaf-blower and I know there are ordinances against running those at night. So I'm wondering if it's reasonable to expect that they would turn it off during sleeping hours. Odds are it's going to be a few days before we get our power back and the last thing I need is a family that's even grumpier than we already are. My neighbors are very nice and I'd never call the police or anything (and I'm sure the cops have better things to do right now). I would consider asking nicely if it became egregious but i'm hoping I don't have to. Do you think it goes without saying that they will turn it off at night?? |
| They probably will not turn it off at night. Our neighbors, on both sides, have heavy duty generators and they are super loud. |
|
i doubt it. its hot, they need light, they bought a generator for this circumstance. and their windows are probably closed and they have no idea that its so loud.
if you can't live with it,go over and ask them if you can help move it away from your bedroom windows to the opposite side of their house. but i would be really nice - who knows if you'll need their help and their generator any one of these nights... |
| If you are in MoCo there are noise regulations for generators - day and night. Don't know about elsewhere. They Should be offering you coffee or fridge space or something to make up for the noise. I'd definitely say something at night. |
| You can buy quiet generators. Quieter than an idling car, but they are expensive. Your neighbors are cheap and/or inconsiderate. |
| Might they move it? Maybe suggest that, and if they can't they'll offer to turn it off at night. Good luck! |
| My very nice neighbor not only offers us an extension from his generator so we can power our fridge for a few hours a day, but he also turns it off at night so as not to bother us or the neighbors on the other side. It's the right thing to do unless the generator is one of the quiet ones or its positioned in such a way that the noise doesn't affect the neighbors much. If I were you I would definitely let them know that the noise is too loud/too close to your bedroom windows. |

What about the fumes? 15 feet from a running car/truck exhaust pipe is not something I'd care to have 27/7.
Does anyone have electric battery indoor generators with the solar chargers? http://colemanlightandpower.com/epg_indoor_faq.html If i had something like this I'd run the modem/wireless router and a dorm fridge , coffee pot, office size microwave. |
| power will be back up soon. Just put up with it. It will not be long |
Ha--how long have you lived in this area? |
Or bought it last minute and got whatever was left! |
I wish I had three extra hours in my day. LUCKY! Seriously though, get over it. Generators are common in our neighborhood. If you want to complain, call PEPCO or Dominion. |
I'm in Fairfax County and we offered our neighbors fridge space. We didn't have it on all night though and it is a fairly quiet one. Our power went out about 2am and it was restored by early afternoon so no reason to run it all night, but I would have if our power was still out. I don't want to lose all of the food in my fridge! |
We have the "quiet" inexpensive type. But I would NEVER call anyone cheap or inconsiderate for buying one that's not expensive. Who's cheap are those who complain about power outages who DON'T fork over some cash for a generator. |
If it's "fairly quiet" then that's one thing. But are you sure it's really as quiet as you think? FYI if you ran it all day and just turned it off at night so your neighbors don't hate you (because trust me, they do, fridge space or not), you wouldn't lose the stuff in your fridge. |
