No, I expect him to be open to the idea of placing the generator in a less offending location, read previous post on this page. |
Okay, previous page. |
| This thread (and peoples behavior this weekend), makes me think the Mayans may have been on to something. |
You mean you would have preferred a base 20 numeral system? |
I had no idea the Mayans were into base 20. I would only be 28 I guess. Hmm, maybe I do prefer it. |
| I don't think anyone disagrees that a certain amount of noise is acceptable, but do you honestly think there is no limit on how loud a neighbor has the right to be on their own property? Isn't this the point of noise ordinances? I didn't measure the decibel level of my neighbor's generator but I would bet anything it exceeded the maximum level of noise permissible at night. We live in a small house in a pretty dense neighborhood so there's really no way to get away from it. And no he does not have a medical condition. Is it your position that noise ordinances don't apply to generators? Is there some kind of exclusion in the law? (I honestly don't know.) |
NP here. I believe people only use generators in emergency situations. As such, yes I think they should be excluded. Incidentally, it is not so easy to relocate a generator. Much is dependent on where the wiring is located to plug the generator into the electrical box. |

This happens, what - twice a year - live with it! Most of my neighbors have generators and run them continually for light, the fridge, TV...it's not like it's forever. We power up everything but the AC, and sure, it may be loud, but it's a necessity. A Supreme Court Justice lives behind us and he's never bitched.
These are not ordinary times, ask your neighbors to move the generator and if they can't, live with it. |
| To the PPs telling everyone else to live with it - maybe your situation is different then some of the other PPs with concerns. In my case, my neighbor's loud, generator is 10 feet from us - it spews gas/fumes into my house and makes an already sleepless night w/ no ac that much more unbearable. In the winter its is less of an issue as the windows stay closed. I definitely think it should be turned off after 10/11 until 7/8 am. it is totally inconsiderate - were they having a party that was loud with smoke spewing smoke into my house you would tell me to call the police - I don't understand the difference. |
| We also have neighbors with loud generators. We're in MoCo with pEPCO so we lose power often. This is NOT a once a year thing. The noise is fine in the winter but really has been awful in this heat with the windows open. |
|
You all do realize you're just pissed because you didn't have the foresight/cash to buy your own generator, right?
Cause if you did? You would be watching TV and not bitching here. |
Yeah, it's called a vigesimal system, pretty cool. It was somewhat common in Europe too. Still survives in modern-day French: quatre-vingts for 80, for example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vigesimal |
Tiny violin. Very. tiny. violin. |
| amazing what people around here complain about. |
NP here, and I agree that he should have moved the generator or turned it off at night. FWIW, we have a generator. It is darn loud, so we power up the fridge all day, and then turn it off at night. Our food came though just fine, but even if it didn't, I would rather to replace some food than have hostile, unfriendly neighbors. |
