What's up at Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac, MD???

The PP info is not correct.

There are 4 boys from the current 5th grade, rising 6th grade class. 2 are going to Mater Dei, one to the Heights. One to a gifted program in MoCo because he has very exceptional math skiills.

It is very common for a few boys to leave Mercy in 6th grade. Mater Dei, for example, is very selective. It has a entering 1st grade class, then expands at 6th.

So this is a red herring, though I respect the opinion of the father who posted that his son was leaving. But other posters have made it seem much more dramatic.

PP mentioned the current 6th and you refer to the current 5th. So 4 are leaving from 5th (I agree, it's not uncommon to see movement from this school and other similar ones in the area to Mater Dei or Holy Child so that doesn't raise any red flags) but no one is leaving from 6th? That's good news. But if you are saying 4 are leaving from 5th and then 6 more are leaving from 6th . . . well, that's a different story.

I'm interested in the high school choices of the OLOM 8th graders. It was one of the few schools that did not print them in the Parish Times. Any generalizations you can share?

It is the rising 6th graders. Makes sense because Mater Dei does not have many, if any, slots for 7th grade.

Mercy had an exceptional year for high school placement, particularly the boys. Almost all got into Prep. or Gonzaga or both. Some opted for other schools and got in.

The Mercy 8th grade class was also a double class, so even better stats.

Many girls got into Visitation and Stone Ridge, though Visitation was a challenge because they had a high number of applications. See other threads.

Red herring? Very assertive on your part. The fact is that six boys are leaving from the OLOM rising 7th grade class. Although it is rumored, I cannot confirm that two girls are leaving from the rising 7th grade. I have no information about the rising sixth grade.

Might not be what the parishioners at OLOM think. But then, what does the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the United States know about Catholicism?

Serious question - what would he say? I'm not being snarky, I seriously would like to know. TIA.

A second serious question --- Why should anyone care?

I have been a practicing Catholic for many years and a graduate of Catholic schools and I had to Google Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See" to find out it the Vatican's ambassador to the US. Assuming the Apostolic Nunciature said what this person thinks he said, it really doesn't have much weight.

LOL! While every person of the Vatican is probably going to be designated with an ecclesiastical role, this is really more just the ambassador from the country that is Vatican City. And given this current Pope's ridiculous focus on the political - see what he did to those nuns in Silver Spring - rather than the true mission of the church, who really cares what the Vatican City Ambassador thinks.

The Ambassador's thoughts on Catholic school education in the US are, at best, superfluous.

And I say this as a life long Catholic.

My son attended Mercy for 2 years (1st and 2nd grade). He was tormented by the boys because he was not a very athletic kid like many of them. This was brought to the attention of the teachers and principal, and they did nothing about it. Their suggested solution was for him to just stay away from the the bullying kids, and the teacher made a general statement to the entire class about not teasing each other. Bullying is tolerated if it is someone who is from one of the wealthy country club families. The bullying continued after this talk to the class and it got so bad, we had to pull him out. He is a much happier kid in public school getting a much better academic and social experience.

Furthermore, they claim to be an inclusive school, working with kids with special needs. NOT!! At a meeting to discuss a plan for my son with mild ADHD, the principal, Joan Hosmer, said nothing during most of the meeting until the end when she said, "When will he start taking meds?" Pathetic!!!

I know some the the boys who left Mercy for rising 6th grade. Many went to public schools because the academics are more rigorous and activities are more plentyful. Mercy is too small of a school for middle schoolers.

Finally, a comment about the moms. They are nice people, but they generally stay in their own clique. There is a group of them who all belong to Congressional, and it is very difficult to break into their circle.

This is first hand experience. Do with this information what you like, but I do not recommend this school.

Well things are going to change now.... The Pricipal, Ms Hosmer, is " retiring" so now will see who is going to take over .. Let's pray that nobody currently at the school will grab the post....
