I have two kids who were admitted OOS in the last five years. They were very well rounded (4.0 UW GPA, high 1300s SATs, captains of varsity sports teams, lots of service hours and leadership activities). Both visited UGA and loved it, although they ultimately chose other schools.
UGA was pretty much what we envisioned. It had SEC spirit, strong Greek life, and fun nightlife near the school. Its academic reputation has increased a lot recently, and we felt like it would be a great place for smart, well rounded kids who want a traditional college experience — but who are also motivated and focused on their future. |

The sudden increase in applications to SEC schools from white students in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast is telling. |
Yes, because if you want to go to a better college than UGA you must be.

A useful read if you’re considering applying |
“Set by the board of regents of the university SYSTEM of Georgia” That’s not just UGA, that’s ANY public college in GA. Learn to read. |
How about you go away? You have nothing useful to contribute. Either you are mad your kid didn’t make the cut or you are a booster for a rival college. |
If my kid didn't get into UGA that would be truly depressing. |
It became popular in-state because of the Hope Scholarship right around 2000. Before Hope, it was a pretty easy admit and not highly regarded. Today, it is a great deal for GA residents, and the admission rate went down because lots of high-achieving GA students use an Ivy or GA Tech/UGA strategy. OOS students probably started becoming interested once the admit rate declined, and they saw it as more prestigious. It is a fine school. North Campus is pretty. UGA doesn't give the merit scholarship coupons that Alabama does, so it is expensive OOS. I imagine the national reach is stronger than Alabama, and of course there are many more job opportunities in Atlanta than in Birmingham. But, I as a UGA grad now living in NOVA, it is not a school I am recommending that my kid look at. |
JK UGA is a pretty good school. Congrats to those accepted. It's getting close to the level of UF. Go Gators! |
Wouldn’t want to be at UF right now lol https://www.alligator.org/article/2026/06/florida-board-of-governors-delays-vote-on-uf-president-amid-governance-dispute |
That always creeped me out as a NY native when I attended UGA for law school in my late 20s. It just doesn't seem right to dress up for a football game. |
Absolutely not true. My DS was admitted this year business/finance and did not have HYP stats. 12 APs, 4.4W gpa and 35 ACT (not super scored). |
