Why is everyone at SR leaving?

The MS head is a poor leader and hasn’t even attempted to build connection within community (faculty, parents and the most important part, students). There is no comparison to the previous MS head in the sense of leadership, care, and grace. From the meeting she had with middle school parents regarding the new schedule, she’s made it clear what partnership would look like with her. We are so disappointed for our girls. The only thing of strength to come out of the US is athletics because it sure isn’t academics. The curriculum hasn’t evolved to reflect a college prep program worth the price.

The HOS is not a good leader and can’t do a single communication or speech without crying. She is disconnected with what is happening with her faculty and tries to normalize that the amount of people that flee each year is typical. Compared to other schools in the area, they are an outlier with departures. The SR of today is a true fall from grace from a few years ago. The HOS equates being present at events for caring about the school and its people and it’s evident that she could not care less.

There are a few recent hires that give me hope that some good changes will take place to support the girls and faculty. If the current regime doesn’t see the writing on the wall, the future there is bleak.

From someone who has been a part of the SR community for decades: 100% agree with every word of this post. I hope it is not deleted by the moderator. Current MS head: dismissive, imperious, and clearly dislikes children. Current HoS: emotionally dysregulated, unfocused, and narcissistic. Current Admissions Director: crass and . . . well, a lost cause. And yes: the departing Asst HoUS has been a gem and a steadfast proponent of the G&C of SH education. What a loss.

Truly, -- and especially given the significant faculty turnover this year -- I hope the Trustees are paying attention. The fish rots from the head. The trend is worrisome.

The Trustees are ineffective too and rubber stamp everything. They have known about the problems with coaching and the administration.

It’s truly a mess and going to be for years to come. Things are getting way worse there not any better. I guarantee you’re going to see college retention change in the next four or five years that the girls will no longer be getting into the schools they once were. I are in middle school now and looking to change for high school.

Also happening at Holton...

I just want to say that I really miss the old MS Director. She has genuine warmth and smarts. She loved and knew the kids, and they loved her. I wish SR could have kept her.

So the complaint about Catherine is that she cries? Seriously?

In my two decade association with SR I have seen her take the school through COVID, multiple successful funding rounds, renewed emphasis on sports, and a re-build of a good portion of the school’s physical plant. She’s been both True Blue and Bold Gold.

Why is the asst. head leaving? I just found out in their weekly announcement but hadn't heard a prior announcement.

Oh that’s no good. What made it so bad? And why don’t they just leave things alone with the schedule? My DD is not happy about it and I have apprehensions.

What about the schedule is changing?

45 min classes, less study halls, no 8th grade confirmation classes. It’s bad when the students and faculty BOTH agree about what a terrible change it is. A lot of families feel blindsided by this because we got an email on April 30 with no clarity about what was changing. I wasn’t at the meeting but heard it went off the rails for over two hours.

Are any of the parents in favor of the changes? Given my DD’s insane sports schedule (same for other kids) we kind of need those study halls…. I also don’t like trying to shorty the class periods. Can parents get a petition together to change it? I mean what was so bad about the 8 day cycle?!? It was strange at first but once we got used it, I thought it was great!

Wait, is this change also for the upper school, or just the middle school?

We toured but didn’t even apply. The school was troubling on so many levels. But SR did send us a survey asking why we didn’t apply. So maybe they are trying to improve.

Why was it troubling?

I just feel like there is a lot of unnecessary stress put on the girls.

She's been there for years, hasn't she? Over 15 or so...

How is that renewed emphasis on sports working out for the academic side of things?

You can hire a private tutor to homeschool your child around their sports schedule. If they are nationally ranked, you would already be doing it. These schools are not babysitters.
