I love how it’s assumed that anyone is going to be screwed over when nothing has been posted, when state policy requires acceleration beginning in 3rd now, and when the upcoming Integrated Algebra is supposed to be done in two years not three. Least of all is implementation of a new curriculum. |
Maybe if they’d actually tell us what they’re thinking we could respond to that. But they are flat out refusing to. |
Integrated algebra isn't acceleration. It's dropping content. |
Bumping this so it doesn’t get lost at the end of a page. MCPS is being so sneaky about this. |
MCPS always tries to loophole its way out of obligations. |
The integrated algebra is not a compacted math program that accelerates. It leaves out standards. That means students who go onto pre-calc will have a very tough time. |
They usually post materials for "oral discussions"-- see i.e. the last 3 items at the work session last month: https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=DN3SAM71AE00 I think "oral discussion" just means "this is not something the Board is going to vote on." |
Interesting…. They didn’t have that qualifier up before 4:30pm today. |
Everything in tomorrow's work session meeting is for discussion -- votes only take place in Board Business meetings, which are once a month. The last Board Business Meeting was only a week ago. That it is a discussion doesn't mean there aren't presentations. Other discussion items on the agenda already have presentations uploaded, for example the policies being discussed at 1:20. Just because it is a discussion item does not absolve MCPS from posting the presentation in advance. |
100% agree. But they added the “(oral discussion)” qualifier at about 4:30 today (I’ve been reloading the site throughout the day). I suspect because people are looking for the deck… |
They so clearly want to keep parents in the dark so we can't weigh in prior to the meeting. |
With or without the deck I (and many other 4th grade compacted math parents I know) wrote to the board to please consider what they’re doing to our kids in the middle of this track. I guess we’ll see tomorrow afternoon what next steps we have to take. But the fact is most of the parents I talked to about this had any idea that it was even a possibility compacted would be impacted next year. The transparency around all of this is piss poor. |
I think they will keep 5/6 next year for the students taking 4/5 this year. The question is what happens to the current grade 3 students. I don't know that 4/5 next year will be the same -- if it's offered at all. |
It’s hard for giving the current 4/5 student one more year to finish compact math: the eureka math curriculum is expiring this fall. They don’t have the extra budget to renew a part of the curriculum. |

They posted the deck. And it’s as we feared: https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/files/DTUE6G38E612/$file/Accelerate%20Enrich%20Learn%20Literacy%20Math%20260507%20PPT.pdf
This is not okay. |
