Legacy does not move the needle at Duke. Especially if the kid only applies RD. For ED, legacy is at best a tie-breaker factor for kids with exceptional credentials who are already on the bubble. Unless the kid is from a proven major donor family, legacy is not enough to compensate for a weakness, including low test scores. (There are just too many Duke legacy kids who apply every year. Like Princeton etc. Duke could completely fill their class with strong, fully-qualified legacy applicants. But of course they do not.) |
| Mine got rejected with a 1550 straight up. Top deep ECs and published work in unique area. Wish we didn't ED at Duke and ED2 and Vanderbilt. Waste. |
| Absolutely possible. Happened twice in a row at our Texas private. Duke academics is also not that hard |
Did not get in with a 1480 and similar profile. |
Was ED2 at Vanderbilt a rejection as well? |
| Hopefully no one is submitting a 1450 to Duke if you really want a chance. |
+1 |
| For unhooked, 1450 is low for all T10. |
| What about 1400 and athlete at either one of the schools mentioned- Chicago or Duke? |
I would suggest using your ED somewhere in the T25-T35 range. 1400 is low and TO at Chicago and Duke is a death sentence for the unhooked. |
TO at Chicago works if your school is a feeder private. |
Idk. My kids go to a very well-known feeder private and there is a harsh line at 1500. No TO admits. |
| After much deliberation, we decided my kid with a 1450 would go test optional, as the rest of the application was very strong and it would harm more than help. Got in RD, but had hooks (local public school kid with employee parents). |
Everything is HS-dependent in college admissions. At our private, several in the CCO are former UofC AO..... |
| Duke is a fantastic school congrats to those who get in. |
