Not happening. Need 1500+ there, they love good test scores as it shows competency and intelligence.

Multiple unhooked kids from our school got in ED test optional.

Are we still talking about Duke or is this for U Chicago?

Yes but then you're going to a big public school instead of a small private with nicer facilities and fewer poors. State flagships can be great but not everyone wants that experience.

NP: at our private as well. Multiple get in TO to UChicago. No one gets in TO to Duke.

This is not a thing. East campus has everything you need there and has a great vibe. The buses run constantly and are easy to deal with.

What does NC residency have to do with it?

Because historically Duke had a had time getting NC kids to go there for the price when they could go to Chapel Hill (or another school) much cheaper. So in order to attract NC kids who had the academic chops, they started the Carolina Initiative for NC and SC residents.

Even at our feeder, this would never happen.

+1

Also, Brodie Rec Center is on East, and it’s awesome.

I know, I can read.

A 1450 isn’t going to be an automatic rejection. But the rest of the app has to be really compelling. My 1490 kid got into a peer school but had really outstanding ECs and leadership that I’m guessing made the difference.

I know 1520 + national award who didn't get in.

Toured her other acceptances, UVA, univ of Michigan, Boston college, Maryland, Penn state, Clemson. Narrowed it down to BC, Clemson and Penn state. Went to admitted student days and chose Penn state. It was her last choice. She loves it and thinks she is having a better experience than she would have at Duke. FWIW, she stopped at Duke campus on the way back from Clemson tour and felt the energy on campus was low compared to Penn state and even Clemson. It wasn’t basketball season but it was a gorgeous day and hardly anyone hanging out enjoying the weather. I didn’t think Duke was a grinder school but the other 2 she visited had a lot of activity. Much larger campuses which she decided she liked. All this to say, it isn’t the end of the world if he doesn’t get in!

Why not Michigan or UVA?

Hah. The way you said this makes it sound like a 1520 and a national award guarantee admission.

No they def don't. But I don't see the OP with a 1450 and good ECs being what Duke wants. Maybe if legacy? Carolina?
